New outboard!

Since the weather is cooling off a little and the fishin bug has hit me, I went and got me a Mercury 9.8 HP outboard. I have been wanting one of these for a long time. I have an 18 horse Evinrude that is WAY to big for my 12 foot aluminum.
A lot of the lakes around here limit the motor to 8 horsepower. With a careful application of black electrical tape the 9.8 HP becomes 8 HP
One outboard motor equals a lot of milsurp guns! Have to wait a few months to fill up the bank account before any more toys.
Going out this weekend for some bass and catfish. Got the boat ready and the tackle box stocked. Cant wait till saturday morning:nod:

Where ya going Snake?
I think I mentioned I used to fish Parker Canyon, Roosevelt, Mt. Grahm, etc.
We have 25 HP limits on some state lakes here. I know a guy who had a 30, same size as the 25 but arbed different. He got an extra 25HP cowl to throw on the motor.

I think you will like the Merc. Iv'e had a Mariner for about 7 yrs now (about same as merc)

Does the 9.8 have the gear shift on the throttle or on the side of the motor. It took me a bit to get used to the shifter on the throttle as I was brought up on Evinrudes & Johnsons.

I had planned on comming down to Tucson this fall. When I lost the company vehicle after getting activated, that kinda put the brakes on that. I need a better vegicle to go 3200 miles round trip. I'm a junk driver

Good fishing!

Jerry,
I'm going to Parker Canyon this weekend. I hear the bass fishing is real good but I want to anchor out near the dam at night for some catfish.
The 9.8 has the shifter on the side. I think I'd tear out the gears with the shifter on the throttle!
Havent been to many other lakes lately but with a new motor you can bet I will!
That picture I posted a long time ago with the 2 catfish were caught below the spillway at Horseshoe dam. Dont know if you remember it because it was a long time ago and I never replied.
Hope you can make it back to Tucson someday Jerry. Maybe we could meet and go fishing or shooting or...?

Thumbs up

How's your 9.8 H.P. Mercury outboard working for you Snakebite? Hope it's running ok like you wanted.

Last week I took possession of a used 10 H.P. Mercury outboard motor myself. Here's the deal...My antique 5.5 H.P. Evinrude gave me lots lots of trouble last fall so I've been wanting to upgrade. So...a friend of mine called me last week with an offer I couldn't refuse. He'd bought two old outboard motors at an auction and since he knew I was looking for one he offered to me the option of choosing whichever one I might want.

One was an old Scott/MCCulloch and the other was the 10 h.p. Mercury with a short shaft, like I needed. He wanted $50 "if" I could get it to run and I could take it back to him costing me nothing if it didn't run. Sounded like a good deal to me, especially since I had expected to pay up to $500 for an outboard with around 10-15 H.P. that was in decent shape and ran.

So...Ive hauled it home, made a motor stand today, and begun to clean up the old Mercury "Mark 10" motor which was originally painted "Mist Orange" according to information I've learned today that I found on the internet.

Removed the two Champion J8c plugs and found them to be totally fowled. Turned the crankshaft over a few times, which indiated the pistons weren't frozen up to the cylinders. then reinstalled them and found it to have good compression...even though I don't have a compression guage to know exactly how high it was.

The tiller lever has a neutral position and turning the grip to the right engages it to forward position and even further increases speed of the motor when it runs. Turning the grip to counterclockwise engages the transmisison into reverse and adds more throttle, too. This whole tiller system seems to be working ok best I can tell without the motor running on the stand.

On the side of the motor cover are the words "Mercury Kiekhaefer" and on the Serial Number plate are the words "Mark 10" and the S.N. of 1069008, which indicates it was manufactured in 1958.

On the lower unit sides are plates with the words "DYNA FLOAT" which I think from what I've read today mean that the motor has an automatic transmission. I was not aware that any boat motors had automatic transmissions so I'm looking for more information on this.

Also, I've found lots of engine parts available on the web so this looks like my Winter project for a while.

Anyone with more information on this motor I would appreciate hearing form you.
