Feral hogs?
I know that game and fish says they are mostly in the southeast of the state. I was planning on going up to the Gila for a few days and I was reading that there were some up in there. Does anyone know where to find them or what the regulations are for hunting in the Gila? I can't seem to find any info on either the pigs or even just hunting there. I know there is no license needed for them.

Hello,
I have read the news feral hogs on the Rio Grand are as far north as Belen. I have not seen any sign around San Antonio. People are hunting feral hogs in the Pecos watershead. Call the game warden, great source of local info. Get one for me, good hunting.
In Texas evidence exists of people capturing the hogs alive then transporting them to a new area for release. Therefore, the problem (or opportunity depending on your point of view) expands. I would not be surprised for all areas of New Mexico to have feral hogs either now or at least in the near future.

It is illegal to transport them in this state. They have already caused problems for the ranchers on the pecos river and south east of the state. That is a little farther than I want to drive to try and hunt some and I would rather camp out in the forest and not in the desert. I have heard of them up in the Lincoln though so I may have to try there. The things destroy wildlife and other resources so I figure taking a few of them out would be a good thing.

"i hate to break it to you but we don't have any feral hogs in NM." NMDGF. it seems that one of our senate legislators who shall remain nameless except to say that she is female and from Roswell, got a law passed that forbid guided hog hunts and hog transportation. NMDGR tells me after this law passed, the hog population suddenly disappreared. it seems that the ranchers were afraid of being accused of conducting guided hunts or, in some cases, ranchers were trapping the hogs, penning them up, finishing them off with grain, then butchering them. now the ranchers are afraid of transporting the trapped hogs to finishing pens. so, with the stroke of a pen, the feral hog problem disappreared. it's called the law of unintended consequences. if someone does find a place to go hunt them, let me know. I'm itching to buy a new .338 Federal or 6.8 SPC to see how well either would work on hogs.
Ferral Pigs are here in Las Cruces ! I spotted 8 in a field about 2 weeks ago the again couple days later same field spotted 12 . Then a large group unable to count along river just above radium springs. Going out today to find area were there wallowing in the mud. Taking couple of rifles and try baiting them in with corn.
TJL53,
Did you find the hogs? Again I am hearing stories of hogs North of San Antonio but have failed to see positive signs.
You might try using sour maze as bait. Think I will try to call Bosque de Apachie and see if they know something about wild hogs.
Have seen 4 ferral hogs hanging out in the river north of radium springs. Gone out huntting couple of times seen plenty of signs however not had a clear shot as of yet. Friend got one a couple of weeks ago in same area around 300 lbs boar.
Hello, I phoned the Bosque de Apachie refuge and ask about feral hogs being spotted there. I was told they got a photo of one hog, but there was no indication of a problem. I think it is only a matter of time until the hogs work their way this far North.

Trust me, if you see one hog, you have a problem. Here's a little info for ya:
Does anyone know how a feral hog reacts to the sound of a crossbow being fired? I know that deer will flinch/crouch a bit, when the bolt launches, but I have no idea, or experience with hogs.

Never seen one flinch, but once you hit one, the rest will scatter in a flash. They're a lot faster than most peole think. Also, if they're not hit just right, they can travel for miles. The vitals aren't in the same spot as a deer, so many folks ended up with wounded pigs when using the standard "boiler room" shot that they use for deer.
