Police: Church Robbers Traded Items For Crack POSTED: 10:16 a.m. EDT September 16, 2003 UPDATED: 2:59 p.m. EDT September 16, 2003 MALABAR, Fla. -- Police arrested two men who allegedly stole several items in a series of church burglaries and sold those items for crack cocaine, according to Local 6 News. Investigators arrested Jason Scott Smith, 29,(pictured, left) and Roy Anderson Jackson, 40, (pictured, right) Monday and charged them with several counts of burglary and grand theft auto. The pair apparently first stole a van Sept. 11 at Grace United Methodist Church on 7795 S. Babcock St., according to a police report. The two broke the van's back window and drove it to the Brevard Worship Center on 6825 S. Babcock St. where police said they took a TV, VCR and a music keyboard. Police said the two men then broke into two more churches, one at the 1st Baptist Church of Malabar at 1665 Malabar Road and another in Palm Bay. The men took various items which were later traded for crack, according to a sheriff's report. The men reportedly parked the stolen church van at the York Inn, 4455 W. New Haven Ave., West Melbourne. Police were able to find the men in the room. They were initially arrested for the theft of the church van, but police found the keyboard, a computer monitor and a portable stereo in the room, which they've linked to some of the churches, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported. Both men remained at the Brevard County Detention Center in Sharpes. Their next court appearance is on Oct. 10. Copyright 2003 by Local6.com. All rights reserved.
