I received a personalized photo of Charles Heston today in the mail. The NRA actually spelled my name correctly! It's nice enough that I'm going to spring for a cheap frame. I was curious if all of the NRA members got one, or if my (very) small donation last year put me on a list of some sort.

They sent out something similar a few years back, but this is different, if I recall correctly. The text seems more in tune with the fact that he is dying. "Dear [name deleted], With gratitude for your faithful service in the cause of freedom and, especially, for your years of friendship. Charlton Heston [lithograph signature]"

My new copy of American Rifleman came today as well. If you haven't received the October issue yet, it will probably come the same day. I am used to ignoring some of the requests for donations that I get, so I took another look at the inserts that came with the photo. This is for a new program, the Charlton Heston Legacy, which is geared to pump up the number of members for the November 2004 elections. The idea is that renewing now will boost the guaranteed numbers. There is also a system of "Legacy points" that will reduce your costs for five-year or lifetime memberships.

I just got around to opening mine. Real nice, as mentiond above, worthy of a frame. The next time I go up to my other job, I'll try to scan it. If one of ya'll have a scanner it'd be cool to share. especially with the Ahemmm, non NRA members. (I know, some support other organizations & that's fine) I need to read up a bit more on the legacy points deal. Seems like a good way to get a lifetime membership though. They start you off w/ 50 points off the bat. B/R

Why would you ignore requests for donations? They are fighting for you and your future generations!

Short answer: I donate once a year in one lump sum. I don't really need to be bombarded by them all year. I give what I can afford, and they are actually wasting money in sending me most of this stuff. I admit that I did renew, because Chuck got me all misty-eyed in his farewell letter. However, that is the only time that I have deviated from my policy since I joined, some years ago. I have actually written to the NRA pointing this out (including the fact that they surely have charted the timing of my donations) and asking that they save some money on postage, but no dice.
