Has anyone heard of Steelwater Gun Safes orr does anyone know anything about them? I have been internet shopping and ran across this one in particular that seems to be a good deal for the money. Superior Lock & Safe Incorporated
I dont know anything about them and I dont trust the online reviews. they seem to have some really good features and warranties. Any comments positive or negative woulld be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Any gun safe is better than no gun safe.

My personal preference is for Cannon safes (Tractor Supply Co), but I tend to buy whatever I can afford at the time.

Dogs & Booby traps are my second line of defense...and if I find a corpse in my house, I ain't calling the cops, its going right in the gator ponds...

Halmech, I'm not familiar with Steelwater safes at all. What I would recommend is that any safe you consider, should be rated as being in the UL Residential Security Container burglary classification ....

Big Shrek....

Sir, all due respects, but booby-traps are not the way to go in my opinion. The legal consequences of such an action are usually not favorable for the homeowner. and to the best of my knowledge, are illegal in most States.

I know... "poof" .... well, good luck with it, and I hope your defenses are never tested.

Not sure about the steelwater safes either. I ordered my safe from here Safes: Gun Safes, Gun Cabinets, Fire Safes, Pistol, and Handgun Safes! 2 years ago. I love the free shipping. Especially when you are talking about a 500lb plus object shipping for free. The driver I had was pretty cool too, he helped me get it from the street up to the house.

I have no personal experience with the Steelwater brand, but as noted any brand is preferable to not having one. I recently bought a fairly large Cannon safe as detailed in this thread.

Bought A Cannon Gun Safe

I can tell you this much for sure; I seriously wish I had a bigger safe. None of them hold the numbers that the advertising brochures tell you that they will, so my recommendation is to buy the largest safe you can afford that will fit in the area allotted for it. The fire rating that you elect to pay for is largely dependent on your access to fire protection from your local fire department and the environment where your safe will be located. If your safe was in the office at a cotton warehouse 45 miles from the closest volunteer fire department your requirements would be significantly different from mine where the safe is in modern residential construction within 1 mile of a municipal fire department with 3 more within 5 miles.

Let us know what you decide on.

Another consideration is transportation. Most local safe dealers around the Dallas Ft. Worth area will deliver their product locally for $150-$250 depending on the size etc. Upstairs deliveries are higher. If you buy a safe from a non-local company and it is shipped to you by a common carrier most will only give you curb side delivery and it is your responsibility to get it from the street into your residence.

Thanks guys for your input. I don't have any experience with fun safes at all. The steel water I am looking at is advertised as a 39 gun it is roughly 60" tall and close to 40" wide don't remember the depth. It has free delivery, free garage delivery, free lift gate service. It has a 1hr @1800 degrees fire rating. I will have to look about the ul listing, not sure on that one.Has a lifetime warranty for fire as well as theft (hope I never need to use any of it, but nice to know it is there) I live in town so a fire response should be in a reasonable amount of time. I plan on keeping it in my garage. And I agree with the any safe is better than no safe. I think it is priced at $1250.00. Lots of good info from you guys, thank you. Will let you know what I decide on.

Figure the true capacity, considering scopes, slings, etc., to be about 1/2 the rating, max - unless you enjoy piling guns one on another.

Thanks Cabinnut, that is why I liked the 39 gun capacity, I dont have near that many guns, but i am hoping with the dimensions I will have room for some other things along with my guns.

Halmech, Gun safes are exactly like garages - in three years, maybe less, you'll be wishing you bought/built the bigger one. I went with the 48 gun model four years ago and have been trying to figure out where I could stuff another without it being real noticeable to the wife!

If garage has lots of tools like mine, it may not be the best place for your safe. Imagine how unhappy you would be seeing your safe broken into with your own tools!!

The 1 hr @ 1800 degrees is a very good rating! Most will be 30 min at 1200 degrees. There is no "UL" rating for fire safes & that is why they can get away with just about anything & call it a firesafe. The time they refer to is the time it will take for temperature inside to reach the point at which papers may be ruined & I believe that 350 degrees is the accepted standard. So for the safe to protect contents for an hour with 1800 degrees outside is very good.

Another hint is, if possible, place the safe against an outside wall as far from a fire source as possible. The hottest spot in a house fire will be at the source, possibly the kitchen, computer room, heater and/or hot water heater.

P.S. Most are equipped with holes already drilled in the bottom so it can be bolted to the floor. They are easier to get into if laying on their side, so bolting it to the floor makes it harder for criminals to get into it.
