I am so far from retirement that it is depressing . My department takes seven percent of our earnings each check and puts it into a retirement fund. From there there are several different plas you can chose from once you are fully vested, but I don't really know what they are.

Right now the retirement plan consists of me working till November 2032, then I drop over dead in my office chair (no lingering illness with mounting medical bills for me). Then my wife collects my life insurance and she gets to retire. I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Thumbs up

As someone with five years of retirement under my belt...thanks to a decent retirement plan and personal investment plan, I'm really enjoying retirement. This is only possible because we have fairly decent health. However, who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I was required to pay 11% of my salary into my retirement plan, plus a matching 11% from my employer, which was invested. Then about 25 years ago I got really serious about investing in all sorts of other investment opportunities which balanced out my portfolio.

That's given my wife and I enough independence since retirement to do lots of the things we wanted to do during retirement, especially traveling.

Before retirement we had vacationed strictly within the U.S.A mainland, plus Canada and Mexico.
Since then we've traveled in England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Australia. Enjoyed seeing how people from other countries lived and have concluded the USA is definitely the best place of all.

In addition, for me, I've concluded that volunteering services to others is a high priority for me. Through Rotary International, Habitat For Humanity, and other groups, I've been active in their projects.

Then, as many of you know, I'm a recreation nut...specifically I'm still playing competitive tennis. In fact. I just competed in a doubles tournament this past weekend. Didn't win all the marbles but had plenty of fun and met some great guys from other states who enjoy tennis as much as I do.

Then I'm continually building something for both of my two son-in-law's, and working in my own woodworking shop.

Haven't had time to sit down much and that's just fine with me. I've found that the more I'm out of my easy chair the better I feel.

Retirement can be great...if you have good health, if you've invested early in life and often up to the maximum of your ability, and if your spouse and you allow each other to be independent at times...yet you can still agree on many common goals to do during your retirement.

I want to do 35 years at Cat First but when I get the next 28 years completed then I am going to spend plenty of time hunting and shooting -- no more killing myself by then I will have banked 8million and I should be able to live off the interest and the Pension. The rest will have all been paid off long before, since I am the type to always be busy I will probably go seek out something new but who knows thats a long time off for me - I know that bottle of crown royal I have will get opened when its 60 on the day I retire and I am sure it will be smooth

Try looking at it like this...you're in charge of your own retirement. Start saving and investing now. To hexx with depending upon someone else's retirement program. The compounding effect could do wonders with you investments if you play your cards right. My suggestion is to try paying yourself first (for your savings and investment account) before paying other bills.
