Target Size Restrictions @ Range?

This really gets me po'd. The local indoor range not only charges $15 per hour, but now they require minimum 23"x45" full-size targets. If you ain't got 'em, they're charging $2 per target.

It just irks me that I cannot bring in the NRA silhouettes that I use. I know, their range, their rules, don't go. And I won't.

Well that is crappy.

The range I go to is $20 for all you can shoot for the day until the sun goes down.

They will give you 2-4 of those square "rifle sight in targets" with the 1" grids on them for free. The big B27 silhouettes are $1 each but you are also free to bring your own targets too.

The indoor one that I go to, will charge $25 for every shot on thier target carriers, but as long as you shoot the paper no mater the size its only like $8 all day.

Do they have a reason or did you ask?

22 yards, 7 lanes, Target Retrieval System.

I didn't ask, but I can see no reason, other than "mo money".

I have a question for you.... I measured out the target size, and it seems like a standard NRA silhouette (35"x45"according to Official NRA Silhouette & Law Enforcement Targets ) target could be imposed (taped to) one of their targets.

Just for shooting, I don't see an issue.

The gun range I go to is an outdoor range and lets you shoot at anything (paper) that you want to. They have targets available, that I am willing to pay $2 for, in several different variations. Ok, lane width is about 2ft.

I really do have to disagree with anyone imposing a target size on anyone. If you can hit a pie plate, why not use it. The only limitation that I see is the lane width. If the lanes are only 23" wide, then I can see some source of concern. IF the lane is 4ft wide... then why not use a 3' 9" target?

Most restrictions are money based, and will cause the customer to go elsewhere, if there is an elsewhere available. The only restriction I have is you have to clean up after yourself. Ah and the fee, well so far it's free until someone abuses me, then it will cost. I have five movable stands for customers to use, but if they shoot them to shreds, I might charge them for the damage. And by damage, I mean thefellas who like to shoot the legs and drop the stand! The backboards will get shot to ribbons, and I have local guys who donate old plywood to repair them. I have a few really good customers I allow to shoot even if I'm gone, until they abuse me! So if you ever wander into NE Oklahoma, you have a place to shoot!

I would of told them on my way out why it was your last trip there ! Paper target is a paper target . I know they are in buisness to make money but in the end the customer has to draw the line somewhere.

That is pure greed and stupidity on the part of the Range management.

They will find themselves catering only to local LEO members, that shoot on taxpayer money, before too long.

It could possibly put them out of business, if they aren't paying attention. I went to an indoor range in Cali that not only charged you for targets, they made you buy THEIR ammo if you wanted to shoot their range. It was the first and last time I used the place, and found out last month that they did goaout of busines.

I use to have a range I use to use in Virginia when I lived there.

At first they gave you 2 free targets once you paid your fee for the day. they had the gunshops name printed across the bottom. always thought that was a nice jesture.... well until....

then they decided that you could only shoot targets on their range that you purchased from them (they had their name on it so they knew if it was theirs)

next they decided that you could only shoot ammo that they sold you also. at that point I told them where they could shove all their range rules and never went back...

If you were a reloader and had your own targets you were not welcome to use the range.

dang, that's been over 10 years ago and it still pi$$ez me off.....

Clark Brothers Gun Shop in Warenton Va. was the place.

Open Range in Louisville is an indoor range with the rule that you can only fire brass cased ammo--which they sweep up and recycle. Not reload, recycle. The fees are kinda of steep as well.

We only use that range for one purpose--sighting in scopes. The reason we use it for that is the absence of wind, and the calibrated distance--if you want to sight in at a given range, you get exactly that range.

Otherwise it's OK.

The outdoor range I use give you two free targets with your $15 shoot as many as you want all day price. I usually shoot about 15 to 20 firearms when I go there. They do have target restrictions as well. No human sillouettes. They can be animal though.
The one thing that really gets me though, they used to sell black targets on white paper. Some minorities came in and said that was raceist. So they only have orange on white or blue on white. I just think "you gotta be kidding".

I belong to a private club. As long as I don't tear up the target stand frames, I am free to use whatever target I want as long as it's not plastic, metallic, or glass.
