Go Michigan

It appears you folks in Michigan may finally get rid of that antiquated, thinly veiled handgun registration law. I'm talking about the requirement to get permission, via a "permit to purchase" from your local police department, which is good for just 1 gun for a limited time and then bring the gun to the same for a "safety check", which has always been a way to register your hand guns with the police. Let's hope the Senate agrees and it gets sent to your Governor for his signature. It's about time your state caught up with Arizona. We go to the gun store, find what we want, they call in the federally required check, you pay your money and off you go. If you have a current CCW (which, btw, allows us to carry any legal weapon concealed, not just a pistol) then you can skip the phone call.

Actually, Michigan hasn't "safety checked" firearms in years, if not a good decade, though I do hope they drop pistol registration. All of my firearms stayed at home and I just dropped off the state & federal copies of the permits, serial numbers written on them of course. Yes, you get the permit, yes it's good for only one gun, but you can walk out with a dozen permits, so long as you can pay the change for them all, and don't mind writing so much. I would love for them to drop that law, however, having a CPL, the only part of that that would affect me (and others in my position) is having to go back to the local PD and leave them the slips, which I still have to get, though I can skip the manually acquiring my own permits.

Glad to hear they dropped that "inspection/registration" crap. Although people in Michigan still aren't comfortable with seeing someone packing, although Michigan has been an "open carry" state for decades, but the minute you would get in your car you'd be in violation of the concealed law.

The new law does save an extra trip to the sheriff's Department. Even though I had a CCW, when I went to Walmart to purchase a rifle, the sales clerk called it in anyway. I got all my guns now, so they can do whatever.

Yah, someplaces still think they are required to call in each and every purchase. I can see Walmart doing it as a company wide policy since they are in so many different states with different gun laws. Best to be safe than sorry.

If you do business in a state then one ought to konow the laws of that state.

"Best to be safe than sorry" is just accepting the 'infringements' even when unnecessary.

If we dont care then it is no wonder we get all kinds of infringements.

What confusion!!

Michigan still has handgun registration!!! as of 7/6/12. Unlike about 4 yrs ago it is now called REGISTRATIOPN and not 'safety inspection'.

The Walmart clerk called in the rifle purchase cause that is a FEDERAL law-NICS and has been so for many years now..

Michigan can get rid of the handgun registration and pistol purchase permit if the laws are passed and the gov signs. With all the confusion many people dont even care to call their legislators. If you care call or better yet meet with them and tell them what you want. They are our employees..
