I used to live in okalahoma and they had a saying: "An Okie is just a Texan that's ashamed to admit it!" I don't know what that was supposed to mean, maybe Okies are "better" than Texans? Heck, i don't know. but, the problem with your lament is that the politico's could never be trusted. What they say really means nothing. They say what you want to hear then, they thumb thier nose at you and do what they think will continue to get them re-elected. And, then, the voter, being basically brain dead and brainwashed, votes them back in each time because the average voter is stupid and the elected politico does not fear the voter.
