gun cleaning kits

ok im tired of wal-mart gun cleaning kits that break, and other assorted crap, i have rifles of many calibers, and I see alot of specific caliber kits but I want one for all my rifles, that is hardy and easy to use, Im a bit old fashioned that I use hoppes #9 for everything, there is probably better stuff around, i just love the smell of that hoppes, any suggestions

i am like you,i got sick and tired of buying a new cleaning rod every couple weeks! finally i gave up on walmart and went to my local gun shop and bout a solid stainless steel cleaning rod! costs more it was like 25 bucks, but it was well worth it! bought one for my hand guns too! (15 bucks) but they come with a brass bore guide too! and a stainless steel cleaning attachment. i also gave up trying to find a good solvent at variety stores and had my gun shop guy order me some "butches bore shine" great stuff! wipes out fouling most of the time without even brushing first! and after i use the butches bore shine i run a few patches of flitz thru the barrel...that stuff puts a hellova shine on the bore and it also reduces fouling after its used ! all great products but they are more expensive than the wal mart stuff but dam well worth every penny.

instead of using hard rubber and patches ive been toying with the idea of using pipe pigs! for those of ya that dont know a pipe pig is a semi hard foam cylinder that is blown thru newly installed piping systems (usually on hydraulic systems) that revove all small particles from the pipe so as not to clog the valve bodys or damage hydraulic pistons. the smallest ive used were for 1/4" pipe now they can be trimmed easily with scissors to fit the bore of rifles and they can be cleaned/washed so they would be reusable and they would negate the need for patches altogether! now all i gotta do is try it. i have a pipe supply house here in town and ill let ya know how it works. sounds good in theory though huh?

I have a one piece carbon rod. I'll be darned if I know the name of it since I bought it generically at a gun show.

The problem with it is not being long enough for the long barreled guns like the MN 91/30, my Swedes and the likes. For those I got bore snakes.

I'm having a hard time finding an 8MM or .40 caliber bore snake but eventually I'll run across one.

I just bought, the other day, a bottle of the Hoppes semi-auto solvent in the silver label. It says it works on lead and copper and helps with brass specks in the action.

I tried it on a few rifles and I couldn't believe how green the patches came out on guns I though were as clean as they could've been.

I got a buddy who swears by carburator cleaner. Though I don't know the long term effects it might have on a gun, if any.

I've got to take my wife to a Doctor's appointment today in Phoenix. I'm going to stop at a new store called The Sportsman's Warehouse which is suppose to sell guns, ammo, cleaning stuff and reloading stuff. I'll see what they have new that I can use.

Found my 8MM bore snake at the Sportsman's Warehouse today.

Pretty neat place...tons of good merchandise....some higher than elsewhere....some lower.

Got brass and bullets for my Swede reloads today too, but that is another story.

The best thing that I have ever found for rifles is the el cheapo East German cord pull-through. It has a loop for patches at one end and a jag at the other. These are sold in the EG "tobacco tin" style cleaning kits for about $3. You also get a few brushes, the container, etc. I just use the cord!
