Eyes bigger than her stomach ... sort of

With the hot weather we have been having, Her Imperial Majesty has been wearing thin, silky dresses she has stored in plastic storage bins under our guest bed. It dawned on her that she should swap out her winter clothes from her closet into storage bins. Trouble is, she has a LOT of clothes, far more than the bins under the bed will hold. The conclusion is obvious: more bins are needed. (Don't suggest she needs to thin the herd. She's done that at least three times in the last four years, sent bags of stuff off to Goodwill, her mother, her BFF, and office friends -- to no visible effect, from what I can see.)

She sent me off to a local department store to get more bins. When I told her what they cost per each, she nearly choked. To get enough bins to take the contents of her closet would cost as much as the car payments on the minivan did!

However, Craigslist has a section on garage sales, the term they lump estate sales, tag sales, swap meets, etc. under. I had scanned it the day before, and a seller in our "fishing hole" was offering a pile of storage bins at $5 to $10 apiece. The photos showed they were in the size range she wanted, so she sent me down after some. She prefers clear bins to opaque ones, so I gave those priority. Ultimately, i negotiated for ten clear bins in the 57 quart range, mostly with integral lids, and ten 71 quart opaque Rubbermaid Roughneck bins. I got them for less than a third of what inferior bins were going for new, which I thought was a good deal.

I got them home. Her Imperial Majesty was delighted, but decreed that she would pack the bins as I washed and dried them. This involved rinsing out the obvious dreck, then scrubbing the bins with organic general purpose cleaner and a scrubbie pad, then rinsing in hot water, and drying them. I have spent about four hours on this, and I am completely fed up with the task. Even though I saved the family a pile of money, I am sick of cleaning these bins!

And you know what? If she is lucky, the twenty bins I brought home may JUST BARELY be enough to take the late fall and winter-grade clothes for storage in the attic until they are needed again. I suppose she is accomplishing something, but dear God, I am tired of these bins!

I've seen the clothes and shoe horses up close and personal.

Why can't they show the same level of restraint and control that I have with Mosin Nagants for instance?

Wink

Sounds to me like.
She needs a Alaskan style suitcase and storage container!
Nice easy to load, waterproof & see thru storage containers.
And they store easy in the attic!

I put all the clothes I own with the hanger hooks facing outwards towards the closet door, when they get washed and put back they go in facing towards the back of the closet. At the end of the year any clothing with the hook still facing forward I didn't use and probably don't need and if it is in good condition goes to a Christian Mission or boys home, if it is in bad condition it goes to a local lady who makes quilts and blankets from scrap.

Really cuts down on stuffed closets.

When she get home, unfortunately, she changes into slopping around the house clothing. She won't wear heels for me either -- and you should SEE the Imelda Marcos Memorial Shoe Collection! She has three shelves of shoes of all types in the hall closet; two roller bins under the guest bed, and the floor of the bedroom closet, which she owns 100% by the way, all full of footwear. And that does not count the multiple bins of shoes in the New Attic. She makes the average woman look like a guy -- and you know that WE get by just fine with one pair of brown shoes, one pair of black shoes, one pair of sneakers, and one pair of boots.

I put our fall/winter clothes into compression/vacuum bags and then put the bags into rubbermaid containers. Saves a TON of storage space. It's amazing how small they get.
