They're at it again. Since last night there has been a scrolling message on my TV at the bottom, and just above that there is a message that says that viacom is going to be charging more for TVLand, MTV, CMT, BET, Nickelodeon, and various others. From what I understand viacom is raising the price 1 billion bucks extra, this means a 30% increase. The way I see it is, it all boils down to money and who's got it.
I am in that bundle plan with ATT, and when I added the Direct-TV my bill went up a bit. But it seems it just keeps going up. I had it at 113.00 when I got the direct-TV, then up to 125.00 are there abouts, then in the high 130.00, then the 140.00, and now I am at 175.00 a month. This is just for direct-TV which cost 90.50, my phone service which is 51.27, wireless Internet which is 19.90, long distance which is 13.38, grand total 175.05. So something has to go, I just haven't figured out what.
The thing that pisses me off about cable, dish, and direct, is you have to take a big package to get the channels you want. Here is a rundown of what I watch.TVLand (for mash), Hallmark (for I Love Lucy, Cheers, and Frasier, History, History2, Military Channel, Discovery, Fox News, The Travel Channel (for Ghost Adventures). Once in a while Nickelodeon. Those are mainly what I watch. Now does that sound like 90.50 a month worth of TV? I have Stars and Encore for 12.99 a month. I got Stars because the Encore Western channel came with it. You know those old shows, Paleden, Wagon Train, Rawhide, you know those old westerns that if they did them today it would be a major FAIL.

If you had dish network you could have like every channel available for the $90. I used to install and service dish network and I had this conversation with many people just like you.
We pretty mush watched the same channels you do with maybe one or 2 others on occasion. We finally decided to get rid of D.T.V when it got to the point they were running the EXACT same shows over and over AND on several different channels (i.e. The history channel, history 2, the military channel, and sometimes Discover channel. All showing the same shows over and over). Other channels were the same way so WHY BOTHER!!! when you have seen everything thats on and there is nothing left to watch. We decided to go with regular t.v. and watch the CRAP they have over and over or nothing at all. Usually the latter. Plus it has saved us money that we figure was NOT well spent to start with. Another problem we have with D.T.V is we were customers for over 15 yrs. We still had the same equipment that was put in from DAY one (NO 4 room connections, NO dvr, No nothing, but old out of date equipment, Our remote quit working in the first yr). I think is was one of our better moves I havent missed it AT ALL.

Dish sucks big time now. We had it and it shot up to almost 200 bucks and then they started dropping channels. Direct isn't all that great but it's better than Dish.
I remember when TV was free. We only had 4 or 5 channels, but what the hell. TV was cleaner and had less commercials. Why should we pay for TV with all the commercials nowadays?

Yep and quality programing too. Shows like I Love Lucy, Beverly Hillbillies, Family Affair, Gunsmoke, The Honeymooners, The Red Skeleton Show, The Milton Burrow Show, they don't have actors like that anymore.
It's great how we pay for more commercials then TV, all the while the cable companies, dish, and direct, are getting paid by the people needing that commercials. Somewhere down the line there has to be some gooberment schmuck gettin rich in Washington.

TV is still free for me as I refuse to pay for tv. I get about 14 channels and if there is nothing worth watching I turn it off .

Remember when cable TV first came out and the promise was for commercial-free, non-censored programming because subscriber fees made commercials unnecessary and if programming wasn't to your liking, you simply didn't purchase it?
Oh, and all those communications satellites that are in orbit that make Cox, Time Warner, Dish, AT&T, Direct TV, etc even possible? Guess who paid for the technology to put those up there?

I had one of those new digital fangled TV's when I was on the truck. I would be in a major city and set the channels and after it was set I would only pick up one station, and it was the gooberment station that had the news and the weather radar. Then it would switch to gooberment commercials tryin to tell me how good this was. The only thing I could think of was in the V For Vendetta when the family was watching the gooberment TV and the gooberment was watchin every move they made.
So, off went the TV, and on went the radio listening to Micheal Savage waiting for CoasttoCoast AM to come on. Yes they are amung us LOL.
The thing is its one of the FEW free choices you have left in this country. PAY FOR IT, OR NOT!! Hell soon they are going to be telling you what you CAN eat. And banning everything they dont like US eating, but do eat themselves, like "french fry moochelle".
We have no pay TV at all in the house if we want to watch some new show we just go on the internet and watch it there . We do have netflix 8 bucks a month vs. 90 $ plus a month no contest, the family can watch only one movie at a time anyway .

I have Netflix too. I only have because I am also waitin for them to pull their head out of their ass. You go to the redbox and there are all these new releases. But try pulling that new release up on the net thru your modem. It tells you, you have to rent it. Everybody wants a buck. I look at it this way, if its at the box you put a dollar in then it should be on the net. I go in and do searches for certain movies, and they are not there. I have even called them and asked why. I got a memorized response from the guy.

I have not had cable for at least 5 years now, and have not even bothered hooking up digital antennae since I moved to my current place over 3 years ago. If I watch anything it's whatever is on netflix. The sickening "You must have it buy it now!" advertisements are enough to make me want to destroy my tv, and the horrific lack of quality programing make turning on the sh!tbox a painful experience.
All that seems to be on network tv anymore is a bunch of fatasses crying about how "Hard it is to lose weight", or it's a competition to see which gold digging whore is going to seduce the douche bag the producers have convinced the whores is a millionaire looking to sweep them off their orange, overly made up bloated backstabbing feet. Even the "news" is nothing but advertising, and agenda pushing. I am cantankerous enough without being flooded with wall to wall BS I care nothing about invading my living room.
We are on cable here, we get TV, Internet, & Phone for $135.00 a month, we get about 100 channels, Hi-speed Internet, & unlimited Phone................
I have Directv and didn't get the scrolling message but I did get the extra channels like 241 is Spike and now I get 241 and 241-1( info on the price being raised). I guess people are just too greedy.
We have the "250" package and that's the only way I can get the sports channels. I love college football. Out of those 250 channels, I probably watch 10-12 at most......and also, out of those 250 channels, they'll show the same dang game on 10 of them! Something like Princeton Vs. Dartmouth..... Yeah, now there's two perennial football powers! Not!

Well sometime in the middle of the night all the aforementioned channels were taken off. Direct gave a 2 day notice of what was going on and the message on the screen stated that the channels would be taken off yesterday. So I look at it this way, since these channels were removed (and replaced) with other channels I give a rats dirty ass about, is direct going to lower my bill? These are NOT the channels nor the package that I greed upon signing the contract.
I think today is the day that I raise wholly hell. Everybody has their gimmick and game they play to get money. So if ya don't hear from me for a few days the powers that be came and took me away LOL.
Hey isn't there a song in there somewhere? There Coming To Take You Away. This just might be bigger then the cat fiasco LOL.
BTW I do agree that the channels are screwed up by showing the same thing over and over. For example on the Military Channel, the program An Officer and a Movie. One month they showed the movie Kelly's Hero's. I like that program, it's a good show. And I did not know that Lou Diamond Philip's was an Army kid. But come on, Kelly's Hero's every Saturday night? There are a lot of good old war movies that can be showed. I missed Das Boot which was last Saturday. And this Saturday it is Raid on Entibee with Charles Bronson. I wish they would show The Great Escape.

I only noticed the change after my wife said "WTF!!" when MTV went dark right after the episode of Teen Mom went off.
She said "They took MTV off the air!!", and to that I silently rejoiced. Silently I said, as to not upset her for completely hating everything that MTV has become.
I used to love that channel when they actually played MUSIC.
Headbangers Ball was my all time favorite. Those days are long gone now.
Congrats to Directv for saying no to being Gouged by Viacom.
I'd say Ted Turner has had his finger in this crap for too long.
