On Sunday, "Doglips" and I went to the local gun range.... I'm in the process of buying a rifle and am not sure which one to get. He brought an Ak-47, .223, .308, Sks among others (about 40) but anyway... Did I mention he just got out of a Mental Hospital?!? (j/k) What I am looking for is an accurate (100-200 yard) affordable ($100-500) rifle. I like the AK because it can hold up to 90 rounds and I like the look. Well, any help will do... Thanks

If you like the AK then get one, ammo is fairly cheap.

You didnt narrow your choices down much!! My vote is for the mighty Hakim! WAY more accurate and powerful than an AK or SKS...or any other one you mentioned. Its in your price range if you can find one. But then, I'm kinda partial to my Hakim. |

The CETME in 7.62X51 NATO is well within your price range, and far outranges the AK. When my Spanish Lady speaks, people listen! http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...deloC_Pic2.jpg :assult: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I'd say a used Rem 700 or ruger 77 in 223 or 308. These are good rifles in cheap accurate calibers. If you want to go a a little more and get a better all around gun, look for a used post-ban AR15. Lots of them in the upper end of that price range. And its a good starter gun. I'd definitely stay with 223 or 308. These are cheap to shoot and relatively accurate calibers. For my bucks, I'd get the used postban AR.

I didn't see a preferrence for bolt action over semi, etc. If's its a bolt action may I suggest the Yugo M48 or 48A 8MM for around $100-120. Most are still in very reasonable condition. They are great rifles with very good-great accuracy. For about the same price I could take ya out and make ya cream yer jeans with the Schmidt-Rubin K-31 or the Steyr M95 but..but...ammo is kinda hard to find and if you do find it...well, it's a tad on the high side. For about $250-$300 the ONLY choice is the 6.5 x 55 Swede mauser...pure and simply the best action in the mauser line. If it's relatively inexpensive and accurate semi rifle I vote for the HK3 or, even slightly less in price, the Cetme. For a little less, or, in some cases about the same price, you can get the AK variants (SAR, etc.) but they are fair to good (at best) in accuracy. But, then again, those types were made for the amount of lead they can lay down...not their accuracy. As the price range goes up...so does the suggestions but that would take too much room.

if you want an ex military rifle, the swedish mauser is the choice. if you want new, id suggest a savage bolt action in .308.

What about Mosin Nagants? Those are great and at a great price and the Ammo is cheap and Much more powerful than .223 7.62x39 or even .308 (in some loadings) the longer rifles are as accurate as anything out there The most important thing is to get the one YOU like. if it doesnt work out you can get something else Get All you want They will make more

I would go with two, a SKS and a good old Savage in .308 or .243. Might just be me, but a .243 seems to be a lot easier on the shoulder when you put a hundred rounds through it in an afternoon.

Rufus, I guess the mags are still in short supply. I saw one in Shotgun News and it was $79.95! Thats 1/4 the price I paid for the whole gun. Hollow Point, The Hakim is an Egyptian gas operated semi auto in 7.92 Nato. (8mm) It has a 10 round mag but can be adapted for a 20 round...or so I've read. Very accurate and powerful. It just looks cool because its so dang big! It also has a very effective muzzle break/flash suppressor. Ammo isnt as cheap as the 7.62x39 but its every bit as much fun to shoot...especially when its the only one at the range and people are always coming over and asking...what IS that thing?? |
