Question Stock Finish

I am refinishing the stock on my Romanian M-44. The finish I am removing seems to be a varnish. Is this the correct finish for this rifle or did the Romanians oil the stocks? If anyone has some info on this I would appreciate it. I suppose I could refinish the stock any way I like, but I kind of like to keep my Milsurp rifles close to original. Thanks for any reponse.

The Soviets and Client states Used Shellack in their wood,
Varnish works just fine
