My argument for the .45 caliber over 9mm has been based on that (and someone out there might prove me wrong) , but the Germans invented the 9mil as a wounder with the idea that by wounding one soldier it takes two soldiers to carry him out and thus you are rid of three soldiers. The .45 was invented to stop hopped up Philipinos during the Spanish American War with one shot. The old .38's weren't doing the trick. Do you want a wounder with 15 rounds or a one shot stopper with 8 rounds.

All calabers have their place....some are better at certin things than others....I enjoy the 454cas but it would suck for home defense..too much recoil and muzzle flash.....45acp has been the standard other rounds are judged by....I works. The 9mm with the right ammo is not something I would want to get shot with....Wifee poo loves her's...
I absolutely love my 9mm, and it has a clip of JHP's sittin with it right now, just in my reach.
If'n a feller was to shoot a high grain hollow point that has been tricked out, it is absolutely lethal in the right hands. It is lethal enough as mine is loaded, factory stock ammo, available almost anyehere.
We did some playing around with hollowpoints over the years. Drilling them out slightly and filling em with water, then tipping them with wax, makes a hell of a mess on impact!
When doing this with a .22, it blows Grey Squirrels in half! (No we didn't mutilate animals for the sake of it, my buds granma makes a wicked squirrel stew!)
I am planning on getting a .45, or a .357 for the stopping power, for home defense etc.. but for now the 9 is just fine...
I firmly believe if you are using a gun for home protection purposes, you use a totally factory stock, as issued on purchase, run of the mill featured gun and the same goes for the ammo.
If you use a tricked out gun, hot ammo, or tricked out ammo like we palyed with, you could be RIPE forma lawsuit and being dragged through the courts as a gun nut bent on killing someone.
I think the main reason 45's are so popular is the quality of the 1911. I never liked a 45 until I bought my Kimber. It's not the cartridge, it's the gun. The reality is that I'd rather have a glock 10mm/357sig/40/9mm with twice as many rounds in the mag. The 1911 is a fun plinker, and while it is battle proven, I trust myself more to the modern round in a modern gun. Are you willing to risk your life for the heritage of the 1911 45? Not me.
