That bout sums it up!

Minimum 22 Mag... but even that is undergunned IMHO... I know... I've got one and from personal experience... dont drop the doggies quick enough. That was my starter dog gun...
Now it is my head shot squirrel gun

imo

Those are good 22Mag rounds Zobo! Does one heck of a number head shootin' squirrels! Makes a messy body shot though! Recovered one and was about 1/2 the size of a dime and just as flat... great round, heckofuva expansion. CCX makes a pretty good polymer tip round too for 22Mag.

if you do use .22 lr use something like stingers or yellowjackets. I would feel comfortable with a 22mag with in 100-150yds.

Agree with those who say there's no good reason to hunt coyotes with a .22 l.r. Not just for ethical reasons, but most of those coyotes you will wound will likely become stock-killers if they don't die a slow death.
Save back a few bucks, sell your rimfire, and buy an NEF centerfire .22 or a .204 (although, personally I don't think the .204's enough for coyotes at longer ranges) for a little over $200.

I wouldnt sell the rimfire its probably the best gun a person could own. But def use the right tool for the job .223 should be fine or even a .243 if you want.

I cannot add anuthing of substance: the only time i've shot a coyote, was with a sear 20 ga, from the porch, into the yard, and the dog was obviously sick with something or other.

I have given a lot of thought to hunting the little bas--rds, but haven't done it because I am unsure what kind of gun to use, and haven't practiced good camouflage discipline since I left the Army.

Oh--slug from the 20 ga.

You are not being an ass I understand what you are saying and asking.

Like you said it has been a little while since then and I have been able to do some researching on this site and numerous other sites and from other persons who have hunted coyotes. I wasn't asking what to buy as a first gun either. Nor did I make a post asking about what gun to hunt coyotes with. I am sure I have mentioned it in other threads but I can't seem to find and post I made about coyotes. Only made 4 post so far and none about coyotes, one was about woodchucks though.
Sure having actually gone out and used and taken game with all these different calibers would be a better basis for me giving advice. Does one need to be a veteran of a certain subject to give advice? I was simply passing on advice I have read and received.
As far as me being comfortable shooting a coyote with a 22mag that has nothing to do with what I have posted on this forum as far as request on advice on guns. So please don't get that confused with me giving advice. I have owned 22mags and hunted with them so I am sure a yote could be dispatched. I could use a butter knife for screwing things in also instead of a screwdriver. Hence me saying use the right tool for the job, doesn't mean the job cant be done using the wrong tool. Just that it will be done easier and less likely the user will make an inhumane kill. What works for me might not work for the OP so by suggesting a caliber that is popular and proven track record whats wrong with that? Was it bad advice?

I own and have owned plenty of guns that would dispatch a coyote. I posted the earlier threads you mentioned, because like many others I would like to expand my gun library. So no harm no foul right. It is a forum board on the internet I could have posted just to see what sort of info people would put out. As far as anyone knows I could have been hunting coyotes for years. I have not but just saying nothing is as it seems on the internet.

gonna stop now because I have habit of rambling on and making no sense. Hope this clarifies things for you Jet1, at least clear as mud right

Maybe I'm in the minority here but I don't care if they die a slow death or not. I just want them to die! I would rather eat rabbits, turkeys, etc then let them!!!

What do you consider long range for a .204?Last year I made 3 one shot kills on coyotes at 500yds+ with a .204 and handloads using 40gr vmax I can't get up to Hornady specs because I can't get their powder. That is the only ones I shot at with a .204 at that range.I took some at 400yds and under.Never had the .204 fail to kill. sam.

Same here Sam. I wouldn't hesitate one second to take a yote at the 500 mark with my 204. I must say this round has impressed me more than any other. I think that is because I bought the gun with doubts as to the performance of the round. Big mistake on my part. I've got a CZ, and it is a blast to shoot........
