That darn barrel nut! WASR-10

My WASR-10 has a barrel nut spot welded onto my threaded barrel and my site post. I cannot get a US made muzzle break onto it because of the barrel nut. Is it feasibly to grind the outside of the barrel nut away with a dremel tool until I am down to my original barrel and then permantly install my muzzle break. Or does anyone have any better ideas?

Everyone always Dremels off the spot weld, then pulls the nut off...shouldn't be any problem.

correctumundo, dude. Glad to see you keep up with the laws too. I'd also prefer solder to the other methods since it's more easily removed when the ban dies.

removing wasr10 barrel nut

Hello, I too have a WASR10 that came with the barrel nut.

I was recently able to remove mine. First before you do anything, ensure that it is legal in your state to remove and equip with a brake, supressor, hider, etc.

I live in NYS and it is only legal to equip a brake and it has to either be spot welded or soldered in place once installed.

To remove my nut I used a hobby metal file (small metal file). Specifically a box shaped metal file. I filed down the weld to the nut itself filing right where the nut makes it connection with the front sight assembly.

Once that was filed down I then took a mini hack saw, you can get them at Lowes for like 6 dollars, and sawed at the same nut/FSA point for about 1-2 minutes. I placed a vise grip plier on the nut during this process and checked every 5 or so swipes of the hack saw until the nut moved.

And yes, the threads on the barrel are reverse threaded, so it is Lefty Tighty, Righty Loosey, or Clockwise to loosen and Counter clockwise to tighten.

After removing the nut I cleaned the threads with some gun solvent as mine was covered in packing grease.

I am putting a TAPCO slant brake on my rifle as it is legal and counts as an US part towards the 922 compliance.

I hope this was helpful.

Be safe

barrel adapter for brake on SAR 1

Does anyone know if the barrel adapter to put on a non-threaded barrel(held on with 4 set screws) so that you can mount a brake will fit onto a SAR 1? I have heard they won't fit on the WASR 2 or WASR 10 but not sure about the SAR 1.

Do you happen to know if the barrel adapter that is held on with 4 set screws so you can mount a brake will fit on a SAR 1 barrel? I have searched everywhere and only came up with it won't fit on the WASR 2 or WASR 10. Thanks

I don't think they have changed the rules, they were probably illegal. I am going to find out first if it will fit my ak, and they try to mount it permanently on my AK with solder. I am going to use a drill bit to make a divot where each set screw is, mount the adapter and fill the holes with 1200 degree solder. Then I am going to solder the brake on also and that should make it legal since it isn't removable. It's just too much money to have it threaded or even to buy a used barrel off gunbroker.

If yours doesn't already have a threaded barrel you are better off getting it threaded.
