Question 30's and 40's USA vs Europe

Was looking over a few C&R catalogs and something struck me as odd. Most of the European "Police" pistols are 32acp, 380 and 9mm (and the Markoves 9x18)....their Battle Rifles seem to be 30cal based as well...7.62x39 (and 54R) 308 and even french 7.62 MAS.

IN The USA Our Police tend towards 40SW, 45acp, 10mm and the like. OF course 45acp is the leader of the home defences calaber...and anything under 45acp is usaly called a mouse gun.
YET...our Main Battle rifle (M-16 and SAW) are only 22calaber (223).

Funny how Europeans have wimpy pistols....yet powerfull rifles and we tend to be the oppisit....big old 45 cal pistols and 22 cal varmit rifles...

Anyone know why this is??????

only a thought but humer me this;
in the easten blocks police have more room to do thier jobs at cost of personal freedoms, but they can get closer to the perps thus makeing the mose guns more affective. or most police in the eastern block are corrupt and being payed off so it comes down to not wanting to kill the hand that feeds you just wound it to keep up aperences.
in the us wher we have more layers that doctors it falls to figure less $$ on court costs and law suits if they are dead not wounded and dead crooks can't complian about thier rights being violated.
what do you think way off base or do we just like big guns?
