I basically had that choice and chose the other way. I think the SKS is a better rifle that the Ruger 10/22 any day. So if you could only have one rifle, SKS it would be. However, if you're chosing a first rifle, I'd say go for the Ruger, because the SKS has a lot of things that require a bit of knowledge of how guns work, and when buying one, how to find a good one, because believe it or not, there are some pretty lousy SKSs out there, such as GunGeek bought to his great dissappointment.

The Ruger 10/22 is highly overrated, IMHO.

As the others have said, what do I need it for? Combat/hunting large game, or target practice/hunting small game? However, overall I'd go with the SKS.

Thumbs up

I'd go with the SKS. The prices fluctuate, and with the gunlaws changing every so often, the SKS might not be so plentiful and cheap before long. A 10-22 I can get anywhere (though there are far better twentytwo's out there).

SKS rifles are tempting for the money but I might go with the 10/22

I would take the SKS over the 10/22 any day. It is more versatile and almost as cheap to shoot. Note: The Wolf 154gr. soft point isn't worth a crap for rabbits unless you stick to head shots-creates lots of fur and leaves very little else.

im sort of getting infatuated with the sks, theres a few things about it you should know, first off its hard to field strip in the field, also, latch positions on the reciever are important, and most sks sites get it wrong, yugos are really well constucted, ive miked the gas pistons on mine and all are within +- .005 mills, the tappet also, the trigger mechanism is a bit hokey, with no room for improvement unless you buy an improved spring kit, a 10 22 you just shoot, the sks needs more tender care, but they are a joy to shoot, beware of yugo cosmoline, you can contact me and ill tell you all I know, im getting sort of an expert with these, it took me long hours and sweat

My Ruger 10-22 jams when not cleaned often. My SKSs have generaly been flawless. That is, my Yugo has always been perfect, and my Norinco AK magged model that is now in another person's happy hands has been better than my 10-22 always has been, most misfeeds due to a certain mag, others when cleaning was really neglected for a while.

Cool Trick question?

I like my 10/22 better than the SKS. No question the 22 is weak compared but,......

I don't know if anyone would say "I like my 10/22 better than MY SKS."
