As for immigration itself and those coming here legally, I don;t think we should cut it off. There isn't one of us on this forum who isn't descended from immigrants to the USA (they weren't liked then anymore than those immigrants today). However, those who are illegal shouldn't be given citizenship either. They should be shipped out and sent back to where they came from. It frightens me to think that anyone can come into this country with little problem. No wonder we have foreign terrorist cells within our own borders. I think Bush did the wrong thing yesterday. It almost sounds like something his dad would have done.

Any individual who knowingly establishes a commercial enterprise
for the purpose of evading any provision of the immigration laws
shall be imprisoned for not more than 5 years, fined in accordance
with title 18, or both.

Interesting posts I guess I will just give my overall thoughts on this proposal. One for those of you who want to put the military on the border and deport 8 to 10 million people have you consider the fiscal cost of such a operation? It would make the war on terror look like the doughnut budget for your local police department. Not to mention what do you do with the people who have had children why they are here. According to the constitution those children are US citizens are we going to send there parents home and make them wards of the state? This proposal of Bushes why not perfect could be part of a soloution. This is for people who are allready working. They have largley been getting paid under the table untaxed. Now at least some of there wages will be taxable to help offset the cost some of the social benefits they are taking up. On top of this they will than be subject to minium wage laws that will improve there standard of living and cut into the cheap labor advantage they have over the American Worker. This needs to be followed up with tougher penalties for companies still trying to pay them under the radar. As for immigration overall its not as easy as I think most of you people think it is to do legally. I remember how hard it was to get approval for a youth minister from canada to get green card status for my wife's former church. It took them over a year and the church had to spend thousands of dollars on immigration lawyers to accomplish this for a woman with a jod waiting for her and no criminal record. How is a good honest mexican looking for a better life going to get into america legally with those obsticles? We need a more realistic immigration policy that allows the non criminals who are looking for work and cand find it to stay on Greencard Status. If they are willing to learn english and respect our laws than I have no problem with them applieing for citizenship after say five years of greencard status. As for bush pandering for votes this is no more pandering for votes than Kennedy was with his civil rights legislation in the 60's.

It's clear to me you are educated beyond your smarts. While you make some weakly valid points, your logic escapes me. Maybe I'm dumb, as you charged. But, since when does two wrongs make a right? These people are criminals! Plain and simple. It would make more sense, at least to me, if we allowed ourselves (citizens) To use them as target practice! It just so happens, as you know, i'm dealing with this problem now. Why do I have to suffer, and by extention-my girl, because I do as the law requires? While you, in your idiot mind, justify criminals being rewarded because they sneak, like theives in the night, into this country. I'm furious about this. It's fine that we have laws to govern this, sad that they suck, but, they are the laws! If i, as a tax paying citizen must obey, then some frigin' illeagle criminal should do the same!
