so much to do, before you can apply you need a shop, that meets code for the area, and has protection, i.e. sturdy barred windows, reinforced entry ways. you need to also meet what ever NY state, County and Local requires.
the old days of just getting the FFL and working out of the home are over. but good luck if you do it.
Thor I hope you have plenty of money to spend for safes and extra security -- also a regular FFL requires commecial zoning from what I found out several years ago and then you are also subject to spot inspections on your door step
MY understanding is that you have too also have all nesscessary tax permits..and occupational lic BEFORE you apply...belive it is a $300 fee per Lic period....Have regular business hours...Im sure the local police have some say if you get one too...Of course you need a nice set of comfortable chairs for the AFT agents that will be spendign a lot of quality time with you

i'm going on the assumption that Thor is looking to have a gunshop.
Not interested in opening a gun shop. Strike that! I am but lack of time and money prohibits it. The reason I wanted an FFL is for buying my own guns (better prices) and supplying enough to my friends and hunting companions to support my own firearm habits.
From what I have read today, it may not be feasable. It seems they have made it allot rougher than years ago. Thanks for the input.

I looked at getting an FFL about 4yrs ago. Several things stopped me at one time or another school shootings, politics, etc...
But the rumors abound. I asked several dealers (like they were gonna be honest) $1000 dollars and for the fee and they keep it whether you get the license or not etc....
Its $200 dollars for the fee, you have to have a business permit from the county (occupational permit). I know a Gunsmith with an FFL who works out of his house in a residential neighborhood. I have bought from him myself. He does order for a processing fee and specializes in sporterizing mausers to quality hunting rifles. No bars on his house that I can recall. Keeps his inventory in his house and has a shop outback. Alot of misinformation out there. If you have any questions just call ATF. They will answer them in full....(right after they put you on a list of gun owners in which you will be the first to be visited when they confiscate) .... seriously, get a C&R and find yourself a dealer that orders for a small processing fee and be happy.
