If indeed 410 is a caliber, and not a gage as some suggest, suppose an AR-15 upper in 410 would be legal, feasible, desireable, or practical?
I think if the longest shell used was a 2.5" crimped, it would be short enough, but I'm not sure. The real challenge, which would be really cool if it were possible, would be to allow it to fire both 45 Colt and 410. It would take a bit of ingenuity with the gas system, but I think it may be possible. Then again I've said that about a lot of silly things.

Well sort of, I was checking out some links and stumbled onto a short vid of a guy firing a .410 AR15. I think it was in the Ukraine, Yugoslavia,,,,,somewhere in Europe. I just dont remember where it was at though. If I can find it again I will send the link.
Well, the .410 is definitely a caliber based on an old revolver round. It absolutely is not a guage.
What you suggest might be possible but the engineering would be
phenominally expensive to handle two distinctly different cartridge designs and recoil in a semi-auto. It would be more "doable" but not necessarily
practical to mount two seperate actions/barrels side by side and have one right side ejection for one cartridge and left side ejection for the other. You could have seperate clips and a double trigger arrangement as appears on certain double barrel shotguns. This would also be very expensive on the design/production/sales price front. I doubt it would go over in the marketplace.
I think either one could be done, and a .45 would be excellent for home defense for people over 21. The .410 also would be really good as a person under 21 can actually buy ammo for it lol In the video(which was really cool btw) they shoot .410 slugs. I'd like to see it shooting shot rather than slugs as that would be ideal for home defense. But either way, that's a good idea. Maybe they can even do like Saiga did and make a .20 guage as well.
I believe the maximum cartridge overall length the ar magwell will support is something like 2.26"
Even the 2 3/4" shells would be too long. You could probably make the 45lc work, and use the 410 single shot, but I don't really think it would work that well.
Now, I remember seeing the 12ga mini shells. Something like that could be made to work, and it would be SWEET!!!!
The gas system problem could be probably be addressed by having a variable aperture gas block. Turn it one way for .410, the other for 45lc. Hell, while your at it, put one more notch in for 460 SW. Woo Hoo!!
As far as an assault rifle platform for a .410 I have a Saiga-One of my favorite guns,Just got additional 10 and 15 shot magazines for it.Slugs or buckshot seem to perform very well.I even have the removeable side mount scope for it-guess it is basically a Kalishnakov!
