MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- Controversial rapper Maurice Young, better known as "Trick Daddy," served as a motivational speaker at an FCAT event focused on the impact the test might have on this year's graduating class.
The choice of speakers left some at the event, which was hosted by the Florida Black Caucus, feeling uneasy, but organizers defended the rapper (pictured).
"Whether we like it or not, because of his lyrics and what he does, he's a role model to kids. You can either recognize it or not. I'm not here to talk or promote the quality or lack of quality of the lyrics. If he wants to add to the voice that are going to inspire the young kids in Dade County to have a better quality education, to focus on that, is support him for that effort," said Rep. Edward Jennings.
The speech at Miami Edison Middle School added to a tally of community service hours Trick Daddy must complete for his conviction on drug and firearm charges last year.
