Lightbulb I neat leason I learned about C&R rifles

Now I never claimed to be the smartest person here...best looking yes..but never the smartest In any case I've been playing around with a C&R French MAS in 308 for over a year...diffrent scopes, mounts, rings etc....trying to make a 1936 rifle..that was not designed to have a scope not only have one but shoot like a varmit rifle.....the main reson is that the MAS was $150 and a varmit rifle is 400.....SO over this year Ive spent about 200+ on diffrent mounts, rings, scopes.....and I finaly got a set of rings high enough to let me use a 3x9 scope and have the bolt clear the scope.....Im all happy.....SO I go to the range today...yep rings plenty high...so high that with the design of the rifle..the after market scope rail...and rings that my chin dont even touch the stock..much less my cheak Like shooting with a paracsope....in any case this BR3G Franken rifle combo shoots groups about as well as I spell.

The moral of the story...at least for me....Is that I need to keep the rifles I get (pistols too) especialy C&R stuff like they came...the way they were made....and enjoy shooting them as they or ....IF I want a varmit sub-MOA rifle buy one that is made to be that.....But dont bubba up a perfectly good C&R rifle trying to make it something other than what it is. Im not saying C&R stuff is not accurate...in some case VERY....but to force diffrent modafacations on it..to make it in effect a diffrent rifle is a waste of a good rifle...MY time and MY $$.

DL I have learned that the best rifles to mod are the common ones, Mausers and Enfields if you want to make a varmint rig try finding an old 7mm - by the way how does the MAS shoot w/o the scope

Not too bad...without a scope...about 4-6" groups with surplus ammo....this is a centruary arms conversion from 7.5mas to 308.....my plan is to put Iron sights back on it....its a nice rifle...the french have some funny taste in bolt design....but overall a nice rifle.

Talking YOU HAVE LEARNED A VALUBLE LESSON

no matter what you do a pig is still a pig. i got a semi-sportered Polish Mauser, bubbaed the stock, had a smithy bend the bolt. all totaled it was costing as much as a low end Sav 110. never again.

Thumbs up

Doglips...it seems that you've learned that once you get over the challenge to personally modify a firearm, like you did, that it's really not a good idea to try to make one design into what it's not intended to be.

As Papa G said, "It's still a pig."

Thanks for the lesson.

Freakish conversion aspirations aside, My Mauser and Mosin, and Yugo SKS will remain stock.

well i agree to a point. i wouldnt give up on the dream of makin it shoot great! what id do with it is fab a side mount for the scope, re-crown the barrel (a nice target crown worked great on my 1905 mosin) then id play with some reloads! ammo is the key bro! i have a theory about surplus ammo it goes like this...if it was good ammo it would have been used already! lol plus look at all the fun youve had working on it! ill be throwin $$$ at my surplus rifles till the day i die.

I think other than a new shooter/ collector we have all learned this the hard way no matter who told us otherwise.
