Just be careful who you get your lower parts kit from. Some of the kits are out of specs and it leads to problems down the road. Haven't built an upper yet,but have plans to do so.

Money, well, kits start at $400 from Model1Sales, lowers start at $75 + fees from Quantico Arms for an Eagle lower.
I have an Eagle on order, as well as an A1 Rear site assembly. I plan to get a kit for short of $500 with options of a pre-A1 non-FA upper (which the sites are for), a chrome lined barrel, and free float barrel. Barrel will be 16", everything else is standard A2. I'll be getting mine from a relatively local supplier called Sherluk. They had a website that is currently out of commission.

For building my lower ,I went with a Rock River forged lower and a lower parts kit from Georgia Precision.Only problem I had, which was a minor one, with the build was the pivot pin.A little tricky with fingers that don't work too well.

Model 1 Sales has the best kits out there for the beginer, hint on the lowers buy a reset punch for teh detent pin on the takedowns (pins) and it is alot easyer.

I picked up my Eagle Arms lower at my local FFL. After shipping and transfer, I paid just a hair over $100 for it.
I ordered my kit from Sherluk today, with all the specs I wanted except that I had to settle for a 16", not 18" barrel since no one in the world makes one besides bull barrels. They knocked the price down $15 since it had no rear site, which I ordered for about the same price from Bushmaster.com. Kit price will be $475 with all my options, such as the $25 handguard upgrade and the $50 chrome lined barrel upgrade. I'll pick it up at the next gun show, so shipping will be nil. So I basically get a forged, chrome lined, free floated, slick sided AR carbine for under $600, which is retail for an Olympic Arms Plinker, which have recently been known to break due to the weaker nature of cast aluminum.

OK I'm convinced BRG3, go ahead and order me one, when it comes in I'll send you my address, ship it to me and when it gets here I'll send you a check!
In all seriousness, as soon as I get the parts and assemble it together, I'll give you guys a full report, links to where I got my supplies, and everything else I've learned in the process.

Built about thirty also and I have never had to set headspace. Although, I have used many different lowers, I favor the Bushmaster. The parts kits I find to be the best and the cheapest are from M&A Parts. All the configurations seem to shoot about the same except for the Ultra Match that I built with a 26" heavy 1-9 twist barrel, free float handguard tube and match trigger. That sucker is a tack driver.
