Iraq War Costs Billions Per Month, Pentagon Says

WASHINGTON -- Defense Department officials say military operations in Iraq cost taxpayers $14 billion over a three-month period late last year.

In its latest report, the Pentagon said the ongoing war cost about $4 billion in September, spiked to $7 billion in October and hit just under $3 billion in November.


The Pentagon's chief financial official said analysts are trying to determine why the costs rose significantly in October.

Dov Zakheim is also seeking to allay concerns, expressed by top military chiefs, that the Pentagon would run out of money to finance operations by the end of September 2004.

Zakheim said the military can fill an expected gap in supplemental spending authorizations by borrowing money from other operations and maintenance accounts.

14 billion over 3 months that averages out to 56 billion per year. divided by 10.5 trillion the GDP equals .5% of our GDP. Pretty !!!! cheap in otherwords. You gotta remember Billions sounds lot a ton of money to you and me because well frankly we will never see that much money but in the grand scheme of things its not. To put into further perspective that would also calculate out to 2.3% of the proposed budjet for 05.

I was refering to the fiscal cost of this war which was the issue at hand Tommy. All life is prescious but unfortunately we still have to fight wars. If you want to talk about the casualty total this is the second lowest body count for a operation this size ever. THe lowest was Gulf War I which was alot shorter in duration and objective size.

Heard on the news that the spending has gotten a bit out of hand,repair of a road was to cost 30 million,now has cost 3oo million.
Afghanistan,the little forgotten item is estimated to cost 28 billion over the next 7 years,and that is not for military but repairs and keeping a lid on the poppy crops,the ones that were non-existant under Bin Ladin because of religious reasons and are now the crop of choice for the poor farmers.
The money that is being spent is staggering,we are going further into debt which our grand kids won't even be able to pay of in their life time,unless we resort to high taxes and large spending cuts,of which I don't forsee.
The banks of the world are getting as fat as tics,we are spiraling into debt that will never be paid off,unless we ask the banks to forgive us our debts,fat chance of them doing that!
I don't think we are in too far to get out yet,but the threshhold is being approached.
But what the heck,it is only money and our childrens birthright to pay it off.
And the final thought is,what have we really gained,other than get a lot of folks killed and a lot of fat cats even fatter?

You do realize that the budget defecit racked up during WWII was 120% of the GDP yet I think I remeber reading how prosperous the 50's were, hmmm interesting.
