Schwarzenegger orders attorney general to halt gay marriages BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writer Friday, February 20, 2004 ©2004 Associated Press URL: sfgate.com/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2004/02/20/state2325EST0245.DTL (02-20) 20:43 PST BURLINGAME, Calif. (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered California's attorney general Friday to take legal action to stop San Francisco from granting marriage licenses to gay couples. In a letter to Attorney General Bill Lockyer, Schwarzenegger directed the state's top lawyer "to take immediate steps" to get a definitive court ruling declaring what the city is doing to be illegal. "Our civilized society and legal system is based upon a respect for and adherence to the rule of law. The City and County of San Francisco's unfortunate choice to disregard state law and grant marriage certificates to gay couples directly undermines this fundamental guarantee," Schwarzenegger wrote. "As Attorney General, you have the authority to take legal action to require the City and County of San Francisco to comply with the laws of the State." Schwarzenegger was scheduled to appear at the California Republican Party's convention Friday night, and his spokesman said the governor planned to touch on the recent events in San Francisco in his speech to party members. "You have, at this point, nearly two weeks of flouting of state law. The governor feels that we've come to a point where we're starting down a dangerous path and it leads to anarchy at some point," said Rob Stutzman, Schwarzenegger's communications director. "It's time for this to end." Stutzman said that Schwarzenegger's directive to the attorney general was prompted in part by a Superior Court judge's decision Friday not to impose a temporary restraining order on the city that would have halted the weeklong parade of 3,175 same-sex weddings. Lockyer, an elected Democrat who is a potential candidate in the 2006 governor's race, already has said that he plans to vigorously defend the state in the lawsuit San Francisco's city attorney brought Thursday that challenged California's marriage laws on constitutional grounds. "By virtue of the city and county of San Francisco having sued the state of California, we need to respond to that lawsuit in the next 30 days," said Nathan Barankin, a spokesman for Lockyer said Friday. "It will be squarely before the courts." San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who directed the county clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples last week, has defended his actions by saying California's Constitution prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The mayor's spokesman, Peter Ragone, scoffed at Schwarzenegger's directive to the attorney general, noting that two judges have already declined to grant emergency orders sought by two conservative opponents of marriage rights for gays and lesbians. "The truth is, thousands of people are involved in loving relationships and having them recognized for the first time," Ragone said. "We urge the governor to meet with some of the couples because what's happening is both lawful and loving."

Steps the Terminator should be following: 1) Arrest the Mayor of SF and all his cronies involved in this travesty. 2) Anull all illegal "marriages" immediately. 3) Levy a stiff financial penalty on all guilty parties - hey, California still needs money, right?

Colt; To disagree with one's lifestyle is one thing, but to wish them death and destruction is another. Stop the bashing! Hate is the tool of the weak minded... it weakens your argument and discredits your belief. To the point at hand; Bush has expressed dismay about this topic but stopped short of saying if he would do anything about it. Stats from Rush: Ca has 36% republican registration, yet 61% passed this Marriage protection bill. I think this could actually hurt the Dem party and cost them a few middle of the road votes.........

Hate the sin love the sinner right. I think the repubs can bludgeon the dems repeatedly with this issue. If judges continue to think that they have the right to rule us from the bench than a ammendmant is needed to stop this.

No offense Rufus. Anytime you agree with me don't worry about offending me. Yesiree! I like it when you agree with me. Thank you for telling me. (Barf has been removed VIA request. It was meant as strictly a friendly barf) P.S. Regardless of the above...I'm not gonna become a politician.:jaw: :right:

Pure political BS. The California governor has absolutely no authority over the attorney general, who is an elected official, and he cannot "order" him to do anything.

Rufus and Rave...You're taking my posts too seriously. Ok...I'll remove the barf and the rest is sincere. As usual I was just trying to be a wise arse. Regarding Swarzenegger and being too late banning the 3,100 gay marriages...that's true the way I think. Apparently, across the country, that's clearly not a one sided opinion. So be it but I'm opposed to gay marriages and you're entitled to your opinions, too. Now that's a serious post. Hang loose...Aloha! Ox:nod:

That's good Rave...now to get Rufus to lower his hostility at my sick barfing. I meant no offense to either of you two. Bottom line, though, is that I think all three of us, and a whole lot of other G&G members, are all on the same wave length regarding the point of the original post in this thread. Marriage of Homo's still make me barf.

ox, i would have loved to come to your rescue here bud but i too have had me pee pee knocked in the dirt om this for for "bashing" witch in my opinion is a new politicly correct term for speaking your mind. homos are a freek of nature, there are male and female for a reason, the joining of the two is natural and correct the un-natural act of homosexuality is is not only moroly wrong, phisicaly wrong and needs stoped. not encoraged or ignored and certianly not protected by the law or by the new P.C. terms like bashing. this is my last post on this subject so you homo sympathisers can now take all the pot shots at me you would like, just remember before you do you will be hetero bashing.
