Clinton, Master of Puppets?

Don Clintleone Making Phone Calls

February 17, 2004

Listen to Rush...
(…wonder about who’s calling whom and ask a few questions)

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT 02:10 PM ET

RUSH: Now, The American Spectator today, the Washington Prowler page on their website, "It isn't for nothing that Bill Clinton has Wesley Clark on his speed dial, what with Clinton running his campaign and all. No sooner had Wesley Clark pulled the plug on his presidential run last Tuesday night and started the firestorm surrounding stories of Kerry and his extramarital affairs..." and yes, that's how it got out, it's a Wesley Clark story.

I'm telling you, somebody's trying to take out Democrat front-runners and it's not over but I don't want to digress on that. "No sooner did Clark pull the plug on his presidential run than Clinton was on the phone telling Clark to shut his mouth and get in line behind Kerry." And we told you this yesterday. Everybody was asking me yesterday, well, why did Clark, after saying all that, leaking all that, why did Clark go endorse Kerry? Because he got a phone call. Wes, you're not supposed to say that kind of stuff to reporters. What are you, an idiot? You think you say off the record to 12 of those buzzards, and they're just going to not say nothing? You better go endorse that boy right now; it's the only way we're going to cover this up, pal. So Clark runs out and endorses Kerry.

"Clinton is thought to have once wanted Clark to at least be on the bottom of a Democrat ticket [meaning vice president] but as the campaign wore on, doubts arose. All the reasons that Clark was pushed out of the Army hierarchy were made clear to Clinton during the campaign, says a former Clark staffer now advising John Edwards." Again, this is not me saying this, this is not a denial from Kenya, this is a former John Edwards staffer who said all of the reasons Clark was pushed out of the Army hierarchy were made clear to Clinton during the campaign. The advisor, former advisor, well, it's former Clark staffer now advising Edwards. "The former Clark advisor continued, saying, 'Clark was just not somebody who focused well day to day, it was frustrating. Last night, where he was caught mouthing off about Kerry is the kind of stuff we're dealing with all the time.'"

Well, now, I thought that they were denying this? Wait a second. Stop everything here. I thought that Clark's out there denying he leaked anything, he didn't say anything off the record about an intern, bimbo eruption or whatever; he said he got that off of the tabloids, he saw the tabloids. Interesting how the tabloids ignored that but not me, isn't it?

Nevertheless, now we got a former guy working for Clark who is now on the Edwards campaign saying we couldn't shut him up, he was saying that stuff all the time. He was uncontrollable. "Now, according to sources inside the Clinton camp as well as DNC insiders, which is the same thing, Bill Clinton is looking for a way to push Hillary onto the bottom of the ticket. One big reason is money. Kerry will need a lot more of it. Clinton can facilitate his getting it. 'You look at who's lining up for the cash to keep Kerry viable for the next few months, it's all the people who are beholden to Clinton, organized labor,' this from a Democratic National Committee fund-raiser. These are quotes from a Democrat.

"'We as a party won't be able to compete with Bush's millions. It's our partners, all these unions and the 527s that are going to keep Kerry in the news and on the airwaves.' For example the president of a big union, AFSCME, Gerald MacIntee, who once was thought to be one of Kerry's biggest backers until he jumped to Howard Dean's campaign, was a key early supporter of Clinton in the run-up to the '92 presidential campaign, and after he climbed on Clinton's back he was dubbed a kingmaker for plucking the struggling Arkansas governor from the pack and touting him." Now, who is this? This is a DNC fund-raiser, this next quote.

"If Bill wants Hillary on the bottom of the ticket, all he has to do is make a few phone calls. Kerry would have little to say in the matter if it got that far. Kerry may think he's going to be running things but he's in for a rude awakening." A DNC staffer, confirming everything I've been telling you since this whole parade and sham began, folks, the Clintons are running this party. And I'm going to tell you what, you don't think this business in Kenya is Democrats trying to take out front-runners, they tried to take out Dean with Clark, they tried to take out Kerry with Clark. Clark imploded, Clark blew up, now it's last-gasp time. Now it's last-ditch effort time, got to get Hillary on the ticket. Do you think, I'm just asking, do you think, I'm saying nothing, I'm just asking, do you think, uh, ladies and gentlemen, a two-part question, do you think that if Hillary ends up as the vice presidential candidate, that Kerry will end up being the nominee? And number 2, if Hillary ends up on the ticket, and Kerry stays as the nominee, do you think they will win against Bush? Let me ask a third question. If Kerry gets Hillary on the ticket or if the Clintons get Hillary on the vice presidential ticket with Kerry, and Kerry does beat Bush, do you think Kerry will complete his first term?
