most stolen cars

Near the coasts, it's Japanese brands. In the Heartland, American makes nabbed most.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -- The top three most-stolen cars in 2002 were from Japanese automakers, according to a tally from the National Insurance Crime Bureau. But that's not the case everywhere in the country. When you get away from the coasts, American makes rise to the top of the list.

A major reason has to do with boats, not cars, said an NICB investigator. In places with easy access to ports, stolen cars are often quickly packed up and sent out of the country. Japanese cars and their parts are in much greater demand in Latin America and the Caribbean than American-make car parts. That helps make Japanese cars the products of choice for coastal car thieves, said Ivan Blackman, director of vehicle investigations for NICB. The NICB's count of most-stolen vehicles is based on data collected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hawaii does not participate in the FBI's data collection program.

Toyota and Honda still top the list, according to insurance group count from FBI data.
March 2, 2004: 11:06 AM EST
By Peter Valdes-Dapena, CNN/Money Staff Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - The numbers are in, and thieves prefer Toyotas.

The 1989 Toyota Camry was the most stolen car during the year 2002, according to a new study released Friday by National Insurance Crime Bureau. The 1994 Honda Accord was the second most-commonly stolen car. The 2000 Honda Civic came in third.

"These vehicles are most often taken for their parts which are no longer manufactured and are too difficult or expensive to obtain," said Robert M. Bryant, president and chief executive officer of NICB. "The individual car components are in high demand with 'tuners' or street racers."

The cars are also stolen to be exported illegally to Central and South America, and Europe, he added.

The NICB's count of most-stolen vehicles is based on crime data collected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The NICB includes model years for the first time this year. Previous NICB auto theft reports had given only the make and model of cars. The top three cars remain unchanged except for the addition of model years, however.

The prominence of Toyota and Honda on "most stolen cars" lists is, to some extent, testament to the popularity and quality of those vehicles, said Teri Vlasak, a spokesperson for the NICB. Many of them have been sold and many of remain on the road, available for thieves to steal, she said.

An estimated 1.2 million vehicles were reported stolen in 2002, according to FBI data, an NICB announcement said. The total value of vehicles stolen was $8.2 billion.

The nation's vehicle theft rate per 100,000 people was up slightly in 2002, making it the third consecutive year of increases in the auto theft rate following a ten-year decline.

'33 black Fords aren't on that list??? Wonder why? With their V-8 engines, 19" spoke wire wheels, mechanical brakes, crank-thru windshields...what's wrong with those dumb arse thieves?

Would you believe that my dad (in 1954) talked me into selling him that car (for $25), and then pushed it into a big ditch to stop erosion? Today it must be buried under tons of mud.:jaw:

That's 50 years ago. Seems like yesterday to me. Guess I should look for another 33 Ford. It'd probably cost $20,000 today.

NRAJOE Sir: Thanks!:jaw: Thought I'd never see a 33 Ford in such excellent shape again. That's exactly like my first car. It even had bucket seats and a window curtain in the back. Wipers were operated by hand. It had a three speed stick shift transmission. I've forgotten how high the speedometer read.

Yes, I'd give a bundle to get one of those again. :ballons: :right: Thanks for posting that picture.

Tommy...my guess is that what's stolen the most depends upon supply and demand...plus what chop shops can salvage which would be the least likely to trace back to them.

Mexico and Cuba probably get the majority of those parts. Did you ever see a new looking car in news reports from those countries? Probably won't see them often because the prices are too high relative to their incomes.

Those parts, disassembled, can be smuggled into those countries, and other less prosperous Latin American countries with the same appetites, where there's a high demand for old junkers and re-assembled or sold as individual parts at a high mark-up in price.
