| Minnesota Poor May Have To Eat Healthfully Minnesota Poor May Have To Eat Healthfully POSTED: 10:23 a.m. EST March 12, 2004 ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The poor will have to eat well in Minnesota if a new junk food ban goes into effect. Minnesota officials are asking for federal permission to become the food police. The state wants to forbid the use of food stamps to buy soda and candy. But the ban will still need approval from the state Legislature before it goes into effect. Some anti-poverty activists say the state has no business looking into the cupboards of the poor. But there could be some loopholes. Under the proposal, Hershey bars would be banned, but not Kit Kats because they're made with flour and wouldn't be considered a candy. Copyright 2004 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. | Now they are telling people what they can and cant eat? I never thought I would need food stamps but I did in 1988. Its a good system but has major flaws. A poor person should be able to buy soap, shampoo and other toiletries. How can they expect a poor person to get a job when they havent bathed, done laundry or shaved in a month because they have no money to buy this stuff food stamps dont cover? Dont let these people have a Hersheys bar!!! Might be bad for em. They will be healthy but still stink and look terrible. |
