New guy's first experiences

First off I want to thank everyone here that replied to My post yesterday, it was VERY helpful. Also I did a lot of reading on these forums over the weekend, and found nothing but fantastic information.

I went out today to get My carry permit, join a shooting range, test out some handguns and order My first gun. Below is how it went (FYI I live in Pittsburgh, PA - all of these locations/information is about this area - your experiences may be different in other states/counties).

First, I went to the Allegheny County Courthouse in Downtown Pittsburgh. A guard there directed Me to the Sherrif's Firearm office and there was already a few people in line. The girl there wasn't very happy with her job (instead of telling Me what forms of ID were needed, she said "they're posted on the wall" - there was about 50 papers posted on the @#$@# wall...). I could meet the ID requirements (License and Auto Registration) easily, but I needed 2 non-blood relative references. Easy enough but I don't know everyone's addresses off by heart so I had to go back out to My car (cell phone was charging...) and call them. After going back in, I filled out 2 forms (very easy..questions like "are you a habitual drunkard") and gave them $19.00. They punched My info into the computer, called the state and viola, My new Carry Permit / photo ID (similar to the drivers license) was in hand. Took about 10 minutes or so.

From there I headed out to Bullseye (www.bullseyeranges.com). The people there were very helpful...but they couldn't seem to get it into their heads that I was BRAND NEW to the whole "gun thing" (I've only fired a gun twice before in My life, at hubcaps in My brother in law's back yard about 10 years ago), so I had to ask them to speak english a couple of times. I told them I was interested in joining, they showed Me around and I really liked the place. He showed Me a few guns, ran through the basics of using them (he had to warn Me more than once to keep My finger off the trigger when loading/etc...) They had a few dozen handguns available for rent and I tried out 4 of them, as seen in the files below.

After going through all 4 guns, I decided to give them all another try, with some more distance:

Thoughts on these guns:

Sig P239 9mm: The guy at the range is a big Sig fan, so I tried this gun out per his suggestion. The best I could say is to Me it felt..."average". It fit ok in My hand, it fired ok (a bit to the left) - the action felt a little clunky to Me. Nothing actually wrong with it, just nothing exciting about it.

CZ 75 9mm: Very good feeling gun. The accuracy was great. The action was smooth, too. The only thing I wasn't very keen on was the length - I was looking for a carry weapon, and this one was kind of borderline in My opinion.

Beretta 9000 S .40: My thoughts walking into the door was that unless something else really stood out, I was probably going to end up with the 9mm version of this gun. I think it looks fantastic, and I just liked the Beretta name (remember I'm new to all of this...). The only 9000 they had was the .40 so I tried it out. Dear Lord did I ever HATE this gun. As you can see from some of the stray shots, I fired it like a retarded kid having a siezure. I don't know if the gun sucked (less likely) or I just had no clue how to hold this gun right (most likely)...but I couldn't stand it one bit.

Colt Defender .45: First off, this is what the guy gave Me when I said I wanted to try a 1911 - but I can't find a Defender 1911 on the Colt site, so could he have been wrong? I don't know. Anyway this gun looked like it wouldn't be nearly as comfortable as the others - but I was very wrong. It felt great in the hand, I LOVE the trigger on this thing too. I was a little intimidated with the high caliber .45 - but man was I ever shocked at how great it felt to fire this thing. The accuracy was absolutely amazing, the kickback was slightly more than the others, but any bad shots were definately My own fault.

I walked out of the lane with an empty 9mm, empty .45 and 1/2 full .40 ammo bag (50 in each to start). Going up to the counter I told him I wanted to see all of their 1911's. I want a carry gun and the others they had were all longer barrel. I remember reading a lot of good things about Springfield Armory's 1911's - so that's what I ordered. SA 1911-A1 GI .45 3" barrel. I would have gotten a different model, but I only have so much $ to spend right now - and this looks like it's got everything I want.

I also picked up an inside-pant belt holster and a personal silencer headset. I didn't splurge and get the battery operated ones (yet...).

To sum the day up, I thought everything went very very well. It's a little expensive to get started, but I'm good for a year on the membership. I still have to learn to clean the gun, get a good metal locking case, and pick up some range glasses as well. My gun should be in within a few days - and I'm probably going to go back tomorrow to try out a couple other guns I saw (a revolver for one, just to get to know the difference in how they feel/shoot).

Thanks again to everyone here for all of your help and making a "new guy" feel at home.

-Drake.

Different Gun Order

Quick update: I called in to the range and found out they couldn't order the gun I requested, their distributor didn't have them (he was going to have to go through another source tomorrow). So instead, I "bit the bullet" as it were, and upgraded My order to:

Springfield Armory 1911 Mil-Spec PB9162L 3.5" barrel.

It's the same weight, BARELY longer (6.7" compared to 7") and I like the look of the grip a bit better.

I just wish these things could hold more in the magazines. That's for the range only, if I ever run into a situation where I need more than 6 (+1) bullets....heh.

Can I adopt you? I didn't want to tout the 1911 as much as I wanted to. (Stay objective) I'm glad your happy with your choice. In keeping with tradition, try other guns as many as you can. This won't be your first! Mabe a .......................1911 full size...Ok, Ok. I like the CZ too. Also the Browning High Power for the 9mm crowd. Beretta is good too.

Seroiusly, Enjoy your new handgun. Learn it well. Make new friends. Have Fun! Don't ever foreget to have fun. Oh, and be safe

Well, I'm glad you like My choice - I was actually worried someone here would say I totally screwed up.

I had a great time today, even putting together the information above was fun for Me. I'm the kind of person that tries something new and rips it apart piece by piece to figure out how it all works. I really need someone to sit down and show Me how to take apart the gun, clean it, oil it, etc. Hopefully I can get that done at the range.

I also read from a link in another thread here in these forums - that I should cure the gun by cleaning/lubing it properly FIRST, then fire off 50-100 rounds, then clean it out again, etc. Ugh...sounds like some work but I'm willing to do it if you folks here say it's not crazy.

Thanks again,

-Drake.

I highly recommend Jerry Kuhnhausen's Shop Manual for the .45 Automatic. I bought Norinco and the book for my first .45. I was never afraid to "rip" into the gun. Partly because of the book and partly because of the price of the gun. If I had a $1000 gun I'd trust that book now that I know.

Drake, I stayed quiet on this one too - because I'm biased just like Jerry and colt. You will notice that we are hard core 1911'ers if you read some of our posts. Great job on the outline of the progress of the day and I'm smiling at the results!

Jerry and Colt will back me up on this - the glock guys will give you the most guff about carrying a 1911. Timing is important so wait till they make some profound comment about their Glock and simply reply while looking at them with a slight sideways glance "So, you prefer carrying that instead of a gun?"

(remember, stay objective)

Practice a lot. You'll have a tough row to hoe, a brand new 1911 shooter up against an experienced Glockster side by side on the range.

BTW,
Yeah, I'm 1911 biased.

heh..well I'll stay away from the Glock comments, I don't want to be the new guy that gets flamed all over the boards by their fans...but I will say that I had decided to nix Glock off of the "possible" list long before I walked into the range.

Jerry - Amazon is out of that book, do you know where else I could purchase it?

Then I'll say it...

I hate Glocks! They feel like crap, slip right out of my hand, twist my hand in uncomfortable ways just by holding them, have no manual safety, the 40 models are miles behind others designed for that round that blow up far far far less, their inerts are flimsy, and, oh yeah, they're ugly!

I think you'll be very happy with the 1911 you chose. The shorter the barrel, the more each inch makes. My Steyr M40 has a 4" barrel somehow fit into a smaller mid-size frame, and it is a dream. Far as mags for your Springfield go, I would think regular 1911 mags would work, just stick out from the bottom a bit. Far as the Defender not being on Colt's website, they've discontinued a lot of good guns and seem not to care much about civilian ownership. And their modern 1911s cost as much as the more expensive ones, but use cheap parts like plastic triggers, I wouldn't touch a Colt myself. I think Springfield is the right idea. I nearly kicked myself for passing up a full size Springfield 1911 for $325 at a gun show. I just couldn't afford both it and my AR-15, which is just around the corner from being built.

Darn it!

Went back to the range today, found out My gun isn't available at any of their 6 main suppliers. They said if it's not in within 2 weeks, they'll help Me find another way to get it. He said Smithfield ships out guns by model and they just haven't shipped out new ones of this model for a little while so everyone's out.

Is this normal?

I'm confident that this is the right gun for Me. I'd just rather not wait, it's My first (so only) gun after all.

This will always be my choice and recommendation...

Can be had for about $350. 40 S&W, 9mm, and 357 SIG.

I'm not familiar with Springfield's shipping policies. I would ask around to other shops to see if they have any in stock. Shooter's Place in New Brighton is a great place. Allegheny River Arsenal is good too. Reloader's Outlet sround Forest Hills doesn't stock much, but he has lots of ordering prospects..

Shopping around really helped me to know what's out there and how to get it. I'd also encourage you to go to the PGCA gun show this coming weekend at the Monroeville Expo Mart. There's a little of everything there. You will probably find exactly what you're looking for if you focus on it. I will probably not be there. In the off chance that I do make it there, I'll PM you about possibly meeting up, if you'd be interested (again, only a slight chance).

UPDATE!!!

I just checked CDNN's catalog, and they have Springfield 1911s available. CDNN usually has the lowest prices. Better happens once in a blue moon.

They have:
Micro Stainless with or without underbarrel accessory rail for $650 dealer cost.
Blued Tactical Micro for $480
High Capacity Ultra Compact (holds 12rd) $500

Now that's all dealer cost. Add about $50 for a competitive retail. At the very worst, reloader's outlet will charge $50 on top of dealer cost (paid directly by you) and shipping and NICS.
