These things have to be dipped!

From working in the finishing industry nad refinishing several AMERICAN stocks. I think those little guys over yonder dip the SKS stocks in varnish. That crap is the hardest stuff I've ever tried to get off. Actually turning into work!

Well, keeping at it

Try a little poor boy paint stripper (brake fluid) on a rag. Wipe a thin coat on and let it sit for a few mins then wipe it off until you reach wood then wash with dishwashing detergent and water. Sometimes Berrymans B-12 will work as well.

Brake fluid: It's not for ruining your exgirlfriend's new boyfriend's paint on his sportscar anymore!

I had that problem when stripping my little Romanian M69 .22 trainer - the "Varnish from Hades". The paint stripper I used at the time would barely touch it - took two days to get it stripped!

Now, a lot of guys on the .22 boards say that alcohol will disolve that varnish quickly. Wish I'd known then . . .

The "Strip-eze" spray-foam stripper I use now is pretty good, and not as stinky as most. I can strip a normal stock to bare wood in twenty minutes.

I've found that on some of these "varnished" stocks on AK's, Mosin's, SKS's, etc., don't strip like a lot of finishes. The stripper will soften the stuff OK, but to remove the junk you have to scrape it with a plastic scraper. If a metal scraper is used, be very careful not to gouge the wood.

Yep, I used to use the steel and copper pot scrubbing pads, but they can scratch the wood. Now I use the plastic ones. Don't forget the heavy-duty rubber gloves!

The problem is that it is not varnish,it is shellac, denatured alcohol is best, but brake fluid will work also, comes right off with denatured alcohol!
