Just read today in the Kansas City Star that Cabelas has been getting undue credit for the animal displays in their Wayandotte County store. Here's what happened. Wyandotte County granted humongous tax breaks to Cabela's to entice them to move there. Unbeknown to most citizens, though, was that Wyandotte County actually paid for and owns all of the animal displays, including the giant aquarium, the African display, the large deer dispaly, and the mountain and wild animals on display. In fact it was reported that Cabela's only owns "things" which are for sale. The rest is owned by Wyandotte County. In other words, it would be more accurate to have highway traffic signs directing the public to state owned parks, inside of Cabela's. To Cabela's credit, they were shrewd enough to get this approved by Wyandotte County. They've brought in thousands and thousands of visitors, plus bring in plenty of tax revenue for the County and state of KS. This was a revelation which has been kept quiet to the general public. Since a handful of other businesses have also been given large tax breaks in the same development area...the county has declared "no more tax breaks" because the area is not blighted. Regardless, I plan on going back to Cabela's many times in the future...but at least I won't be giving them credit for all those animal displays.
