I currently have a design for a 2 lug 90 degree rotating bolt action in 35 Remington. Reason for that is ease in manufacturing with equipment I'm familiar with. Question is, do I want to make it pump action or auto? It would have a 5" throw, which is a little long for the round but is necessary for how far the bolt has to turn and how long the locking lugs are. Factor of safety is 2.1.
If it were an auto, it wouldn't matter how uncomfortable or long the action was (except for size), because it would be cycling itself. But it would be much pickier on ammo and could possibly become non-functional if the gas system were tuned wrong. Plus, semi-autos are illegal for hunting in PA. Though I've wanted a 35 caliber tactical carbine for a while, not being able to hunt with it would kind of suck, then again I have yet to actually hunt.
Correction: Factor of safety with shorter bolt is 1.596, not 1.4.
