Thumbs up Mr. Lytle was the bass player for:

Bill Haley's Truly Golden Oldie
From the Wall Street Journal, April 8, 2004
By John McDonough

In Europe, they're very aware of the 50th Anniversary," says
Marshall Lytle, sounding a little neglected but jovial. "But here
in the States I can tell you that there will be very little publicity
about this event that changed the music of the world. Hey, we
were there. We were it. We should be on "Good Morning
America." But they think that Little Richard started it. Or,
Elvis. Well, whatever happened to Bill Haley and "Rock Around
The Clock?"

It was on April 12, 1954 - 50 years ago this coming Monday - that Bill
Haley and the Comets assembled at New York's Pythian Temple and
recorded the song that started it all. Haley died in 1981 at age 55,
long overshadowed by the often bizarre procession of rock supernovas
he had set in motion. But the Original Comets, of which Mr. Lytle was
the bass player, are still rocking away on the old numbers - the ones
that ended the age of the Great American Songbook and brought on
de noise and de funk.

That's pretty much what came to my mind right off as well, though I'd prolly remove Hendrix and in his place say Kirk Hammit (Metallica)

Though if you were going for overall presence and how much they impacted the music world, the three you list may be more accurate.

But then there are guys like Joe Satriani, Ingve Malmsteen, gary Howey, Rick Emmit, Eddie VanHalen, Bruce Kulick, Les Paul and Frank Zappa that were/are all tremendous musicians as well as guitarists that have all added something to rock and roll as a genre.....

Zappa prolly had more musical talent and vision than any on this list....

Thumbs up

Ok...so Lytle played bass, rather than guitar, in Haley's Comets before your parents were born! That band opened up doors for a bunch of musicians who performed later.

I have to say Mark Knopfler.....he plays every instrument I can think of and is simply amazing in more genre's than just Rock & Roll. He's a staple in Nashville....much like Brent Mason (Alan Jacksons studio picker). I think Knopfler's greatest achievement have been in Nashville though, so I think of him as more of a blue grass and country picker. While I'm on that subject I must say I'm highly impressed with the boys from Union Station (Alison Kraus' band)

Randy Rhoades was simply phenominal and monumental.....he's what modern metal guitar players are based upon.

SRV.....enough said.

Clapton.

While they are phenominal guitar players, I have never been crazy about the all instrumental players ie: Gary Hoey, Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson, most Malmsteen etc. They are phenominal no doubt. I just can't sit and listen to it.

I would also nominate Craig Chiquico from Jefferson Airplane and later Starship.
