100 caliber smoothbore

Something attractive about it to anyone? Figure it could be a low pressure shotgun round. Perhaps a big 'ol break action? Perhaps good for farmers with flocks of pests. Custom projectiles wouldn't be too hard to make out of common metal stock.

Suppose in order to be low enough pressured, it would need to use powder as mild as black powder substitute? Perhaps with a conical section in front of the primer like an old fashioned mortar chamber for gradual pressure increase?

It's been done, they call it a punt gun and were popular with market hunters back in the 1800's and early 1900's. I believe they are still used in Europe, though tightly regulated.

I just calculated it would be a 4.7ga in shotgun terms.

Party poopers

Suppose a heavy barrel, major buttpad, and muzzle brake could change your mind?

I will take two.

Have never really had a problem with any recoil, so that should be interesting one to shoot.

Seriously though, I think I'd use black powder or BP substitute for such a thing. Maybe I could use such a cartridge as the basis for something in my quest for the ultimate griz gun!

BRG do you want the email addy of the guide I am using for my AK bear hunt? He has said to me anything over 33 caliber makes an excellent cartridge for a Big Brownie/Kodiak. Otherwise I have a suggestion check out a 700 Nitro Express you could drop anything on the planet with a round from it.

I'm far from actually doing a griz hunt. The money doesn't exist. Part of the design is just for the heck of it, the griz is just an excuse. Chances are I'll never see a griz in the wild, much less shoot one.

That video, from what I understand was a .577 Tyranasaurus. The guy is a Saudi that owns it and is a big hunter, I think his name is Saeed.

Punt guns were normally hard mounted on the bow of a boat and was basically a small cannon.

I found another site with this guy and several others shooting this thing. I must say I am impressed at something that can knock that cord that holds that arab head dress right off. http://www.accuratereloading.com/videos.html

I would say I might be interested in trying it at least once.

BRG, Don't they call that a Grenade launcher?

Indy, you mentioned recoil wasn't a problem. Have you ever shoot a 3 1/2 " in a 12 ga pump? I fired one round through mine late one afternoon. My head was still hurting when I went to bed. Those darn things should not be put in pumps! (Sold it!)

Geezer, FUNNY movie!

I'm gonna have to try one now that I've heard such extreme things about them.

GunGeek's Rem 870 can take them.
