The gas gun will shoot the grenades the M-79 shoots but the firing pin is likely to break.

The M-79 will shoot the gas projectiles the gas gun shoots but the firing pin will penetrate the primers.

i wish they would have still had the m-79 when i was in service...they just look cool! but the 203 was fun too! i have seen some 203 "civilian flare guns" at gun shows...man! they aint cheap either!
