When I was growing up at home I was interested in guns at an early age. My dad only owned shotguns. When I'd express interest in other types of guns ie.. 22's etc.. He would tell me "If your a good enough hunter, you can kill anything on eart with a shotgun, that's all we need"
I have both, I can't use my 700 in 308 to hunt deer here, but would use it over my shotgun in Wisconsin or Missouri if I went there to hunt. Even that depends on the terrain I'd be hunting.
Since then dad has several other shotguns as well as a couple of 22.s and a .44Mag Blackhawk. Took him long enough
So, I guess I'd have to vote shotgun (870) based on my own experience. Others will vary I'm sure.
Same here in North Florida, LD. There's nothing I can't hunt with a shotgun.
We can use rifles, and many do - but I grew up using the scattergun. I graduated by choice to .22's for small game. More sporting.
i say both because i am absolutely comfortable using a slug gun up close- less than 80-90 yds, but i do sometimes hunt fields that stretch over 200 yds. therefore a rifle is needed, or a good single shot pistol.
I prefer a rifle, in particular my Rem 700 30-06, because of the excessive brush and tree trunks where I hunt. However, SG's with slugs would give Bambi a real sporting chance.
Depends what you are hunting don't you think?
Birds and rabbits, etc....shotgun
Larger animals such as deer and elk.......rifle.
Shotguns are not used here in Colorado for large game. Unless you wish to be laughed out of the state.......hehe.
What would i use? Shotgun.....on small game..I am to lazy to hunt large animals..I do not dislike hunting and hunters...its way to much work once the animal has been killed. If I cannot place the dead animal in my hunting jacket game pocket I do not shoot it.
I only own 22 caliber rifles that I mostly use for target shooting... Love to shoot those pop cans. And yes they fit in my game pocket and don't leave blood spots..
