Since you mentioned stirring the pot, my Father used to tell me that "to stir the pot was the proper thing to do or the veggies would burn on the bottom of the pan!" But, Father continued, "one must take care not to stir the pot with tooo much vigor, otherwise, one makes a mess on the stove top!" So, if you come to stir the pot, you'll fit in nicely.
