What would you all do?

The guy from the gun shop rang up the other day, he tells me that he has a .303 No4 Jungle carbine in there, $300. So I rocked in there, cause I'm after one for a rough behind the seat of the ute gun, open sights etc.
I get in there,and I'm looking at this rifle, very nice indeed, peep sights, flash reducer, refinished stock, it has been drilled and tapped for a scope mount so is no longer collectable really.
Then he shows me another gun, it's a Browning .270, with a tasco 3-9 x40 scope, has only fired 200 rounds, it is also being sold with 200 rounds of empty shells and 100 rounds of live ammo. He wants $575.

What should I do??

Mick for what you say you need, the 303 fills the bill just nicely. Sounds let you are hedging towards the Browning though. I have one in 22-250 with a BOSS one hole shooter. I still say the carbine. Good Luck!

Yeah, the carbine is exactly what I was after, but !!!! that browning is a nice rifle, and from what I can tell very cheap too, and I am in the market for a deer gun as well. I wish I could afford both of them

I don't know what you pay for Brownings there. But that sounds almost full retail here. That Micro Medallion was $650 NIB.

Either one will do find for deer. I'm partial to 30 caliber rounds myself, but the 270 is a good one.

Sounds like the Enfield would be better for fast shots at closer range (sub 200) and in brush if you keep it in open sites, and the Browning in 270 would be good for reaching out and touching your target over open spaces. Also try the actions, see how they feel and what you prefer. The SMLE cocks on closing, the Browning cocks on opening. Big difference if it's something that matters to you.

The .303 carbine is also a wonderful rifle
as said befor it allways ends up with the question of what do you want it to do?
do you need a knock around rifle (carbine)
or a tuned longrange instrument (browning)
its up to you my friend.

The browning is older than the A bolts, it has a 9 lug locking system.
The exchange rate is about 65 or 70 cents I think, which works out to about $375 US for the Browning.
I"m thinking of going for the .303 as originaly planned.

Sounds like a good price either way, as though guns were as easy to find and sell there as here. $375 US sounds fair unless there's something special I don't know about, in which case it's awesome, and the scope has gotta be worth something. The Enfield price is fair, and is a good deal if condition is good.

As a 30 caliber man, hoorah for the Enfield, but definitely buy what you like.

My friend has a #5 jungle carbine. Nice gun. Sounds like it would fit the bill for your needs.

Me personally, I'd go for the Enfield. It would fill a niche in my Enfield collection - I buy rifles to shoot, and to get the basic style or type - it doesn't have to be a pristine "collector item" with no holes and everything matching. I don't hunt much anymore, so that's my druthers.
If'n I was a deer-hunter though - that .270 would be absolutely perfect for our Florida hunting, as our deer run just a tad small. .243, .270 and .30-30 rule the woods down here!

i'd go with the browning its old enough that its not a pice or jap crap. and 303's are a;ot more pelntifull than the deal you are getting on the browning.

The carbine is a fine weapon but if you should happen to need parts I'm finding it very difficult to find the parts I'm looking for (for a friend).

I'm a fan of Browning, but it sounds like a bit of an upsell.
Still, what do you want? Do you think you'll have to put an additional $275 into the carbine anytime soon?

Enfield basic action parts shouldn't be a problem - remember that Australia was a major Enfield producer for many years! From what I've been reading, the rifle is still very popular there. MkV Carbine specific parts might be a bit scarcer - but weren't a bunch of Jungle Carbines found in Indonesia or some such place recently? That's pretty close to Mick's baileywick.

If the gun is in very good shape, chances are it won't need any work - especially with the care private owners give their rifles.

Go for the Enfield it sounds like more of what you want. The browning although nice is one I wouldn't toss behind the truck seat

Yep, I'm gonna go with the carbine, It is what I was originaly after so I'm gonna stick with the plan. as you say, you wouldn't put the browning behind the seat. And it is really to long to be practical.
