What gun did the seven men use to give a 21 gun sallute at President Reagans memorial service in California?

I can't imagine them not using a derivitive of the M-14 http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/faq/salute.htm http://www.snopes.com/military/21gun.htm The epitaph chosen for Reagan's final resting place, on a wall surrounding his grave, was his own quote: "I know in my heart that man is good. That what is right will always eventually triumph. And there's purpose and worth to each and every life." |

They looked like 03's, from the last 21 gun salute I saw. They were bolt action rifles. However, this may not be the rule, as I understand, from the Reagan funeral I understood they used cannons. Did the rest of you guys watch the funeral?

Actually, Ruf, the rifles they used for the salute in California were semi-autos and looked like M14s. They had one shot showing the color guard sliding the bolt handle to the rear because the blanks wouldn't cycle the action. The ones carried during the casket presentation/procession, with bayonets, appeared to be A3s.

We used M1's on our Honor Guard. I didn't catch the funeral footage. We did have gas adapters that fit on the muzzle to cycle the action. Here are the origins of the 21 gun salute http://www.combatsystems.net/htm/fun...Gun_Salute.htm

OK I was wondering that also as they looked like M1 Garands but couldn't figure out what he was doing when it sounded like a bolt being slammed.

it looked to me to be a combination of 03's garands, and 14's they where definatly not all the same and some where even cromed.

It looked like either the garand or the M14 for the 21 gun salute -- You could see them cycle the action with every shot. For the Color Guard when they brought the casket in it was clear they had 03's
