What is this CYA time??? Overnight the colors have changeD????? Combat fatigues: A common thread BY CAROL ROSENBERG The Miami Herald For decades, U.S. conflicts came with different military uniforms -- green camouflage for Europe and the jungles of Latin America, sand colored khakis for desert campaigns in the Middle East. Now, in perhaps a nod to the global war on terror, the Army is turning to a one-design fits-all fatigue that blends mossy greens and desert browns. The Army unveiled the latest design this week -- called ACU, or Army Combat Uniform -- boasting that it will need no starch or dry cleaning and will be manufactured entirely in the United States. Using military lingo for the Battle Dress Uniforms and Desert Combat Uniforms worn by American soldiers around the world, Army Maj. Gary Tallman summed it up simply at the Pentagon on Tuesday: ``The BDU and DCU are heading to history here.'' The designs are called ''digitals,'' like the new U.S. Marine fatigues adopted two years ago, and have small square blocks of different colors that merge into wavy patterns. One noteworthy feature: Gone is the red, white and blue flag shoulder patch that drew attention in the dark and endangered troops on night patrol in Iraq. Instead, the new uniforms will feature Old Glory morphed into a more muted tan and black. FOR COMFORT Army officers emphasize that the 21st century uniforms are meant to be both more efficient and comfortable, replacing buttons with Velcro. They were designed by enlisted soldiers, not officers, and tested by Stryker Brigade soldiers from Fort Polk, La., first in the United States then in Iraq. Each uniform includes a top, trousers, moisture-wicking T-shirt and tan, no-shine 1combat boots in place of the more traditional spit-and-polish black leather boots. Initially, each will cost $88, about $30 more than the current-issue uniform. But Tallman said they will cost less in the long run because they are roomier, made of a wrinkle-free fabric that is essentially wash and wear. 17 MONTHS AWAY Army commanders characterized the redesign as the first major overhaul of their uniform since 1981, although a previously rarely seen desert-style uniform drew attention in the 1991 Iraq war, called Desert Storm. Recruits will start getting them in about 17 months and the entire Army should be identically outfitted by December 2007. An Army innovator who introduced the outfit at the Pentagon on Monday said no single style is universally suitable to every conflict across the globe. But, said Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Myhre, the latest innovation comes close. ''The color scheme in the ACU capitalizes on the environments that we operate in,'' Myhre said. ``The current colors on the ACU are green-woodland, gray-urban environments and sand brown-desert. The pattern is not a 100-percent solution in every environment, but a good solution across the board.'' A BIRTHDAY The Army unveiled the uniform to coincide with its 229th birthday, being celebrated this week, and said that troops tested prototypes for months by literally dragging them through the sand in Iraq and at Army training centers in the United States. http://www.montereyherald.com/mld/mo...ld/8936852.htm

The Canadians have been wearing this pattern for years. It is called the Canadian Disruptive Pattern (CADPAT) Here is why they wear it: "CADPAT" is a computer generated pattern incorporating sophisticated Near Infrared protection designed to conceal soldiers from image intensification devices (night vision). And it actually works. I watched a video of the PPCLI soldiers who were training in Afhganistan the night that they were bombed by the Air National Guard pilots. When the soldier stands still they become invisible in night vision. Its fascinating to watch. The reason they are changing boots is for the obvious reason that maintaining a shine on boots is counter productive to cammouflage, but also a maintenance issue while in action. http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/lf/Engl...=67&uSection=5 Will post some other pics tonight or tomorrow They are very interesting!

I saw one of the new uniforms today. Looks a little different than the picture above. It reminded me of a tiger stripe camo. design. I thought it looked ok.

the search for a universal camoflage has been goin on forever, but in my opinion they past up the closest they will ever come. in my opinion the plain O.D. green bdu's with the slanted breast pockets was about the best. its color wasnt too dark that it wouldnt blend into lighter enviroments and it was blank so the individual soldiers could field modify them to fit their surroundings with either mud, spray paint etc. and the rip stop material was also great! a heck of alot easier to repair in the field. by the time i joined the army they had already been phased out but most of the guys in my team had several pair we bought from surplus along with some tiger stripes...the tiger stripes just looked cool! :uzi:

having seen the pictures Signa posted elsewhere, I must say I rather like the look of the new Air Force Camo uniform. It may or may not be practical, but it looks good. Reminds of the Vietnam era Tiger Stripes. * ** |
