How could I have it ready to go for such a situation?
I haven't bought one yet, but I was looking for something that is capable of heavy modification and accessorizing. Shortest barrel allowed by law, pistol grip, and highest shell capacity. I told the local gun shop what I was looking for earlier today and they suggested a Mossberg Persuader. I liked it, but it needed a collapsible buttstock to go with the pistol grip and the slide seemed a little wobbly. Any suggestions for shotguns lik this? | I think keeping it simple is the way to go for home defense. face it, your not doing forced entries and probing unknown rooms and stuff, why would you need bayonets, lasers, flash lights and grenade lanchers. all that stuff is just show unless you are doing police work or know your going to get raided. It just makes your gun more heavy and ackward. If something does happen at home it is usually so fast you wont have time to use all the bells and whissles anyway, safety off, bang bang! I dont want a flash light pointing out right where to shoot me. You are on the right track with short barrel high cap and maybe a pistol grip. Now the Teens complicate things quite a bit, you cant put it out of their reach and dont think you can hide it cause they will find it. Those gun safes made to be mounted right at your bed with the electronic key pad shaped like a hand are great, you can wake up in complete darkness, reach over feel the hand shape punch your memorized code in and presto have your weapon ready to rock and roll.

All I'd want accessory wise is: pistol grip, collapsible buttstock, side saddle carriers, flashlight up front (to see in dark), ghost ring sights, barrel shroud. That's pretty much it. Maybe a foregrip but doubtful. Shortest barrel, biggest magazine. Perfect!

Mine is a old Revelation shotgun, Mossberg clone, takedown model. I can stow it in a backpack and go for a walk without attracting any funny looks. It has a 18 1/4" barrel, with heatshield and ghostring sights. I keep a full stock on it and can consistently keep 9/10 slugs on a silhouette out to 150yds. Having said that, it stays loaded with 3x 00 buck followed out the muzzle by 3x slugs. The shell holder is stuffed with 5 more slugs. I have had a pistolgrip on it in the past but decided years ago that i would much rather have the stability of a full stock than the compactness of the p-grip. I dont want anything battery operated as Murphy seems to hold a grudge against me, but this gun has yet to fail in any way whatsoever. This is the same gun i have carried for the past 8 1/2 years and i have gotten a little familiar with it in that time. Cant say i dont have a use for other forms of weapons, but for up close, especially when it is my loved ones counting on me to end a threat FAST, this shotgun is what i reach for with no doubts about it being the best choice available. I dont want a bayonet, but cant argue with them being useful at times, so to each his own. The only additions to this gun are a sling, the sights, and the heatshield. Simple, fast, and idiotproof.

Here are my thoughts on a scattergun for home defense.
1.) Only go for a folding stock if it is necessary for storage or placement in a confined space.
2.) A light and/or laser will add a level of confidence in a tense life or death situation. However, these tools are a complement to routine practice and familiarity with your weapon, not a replacement.
3.) Why waste time with a birdshot "warning" load? Birdshot use as a safety measure in an environment with significant risk from overpenetration may be a necessary compromise; but in any other situation, there should be no legal complications if you are justified in your use of force, so why not improve your chances of a first shot stop?
4.) Go with buckshot in the tube and a few slugs on a side saddle. Practice getting the slugs into the chamber under pressure and know when to do so.
5.) Practice, Practice, Practice!!!
Oh, by the way, for whomever was looking for a way to secure their shotgun with quick access: look into a law enforcement shotgun locking unit made for securing weapons in police cruisers. Electronic models are available which release upon activation of a hidden button/switch. Try galls.com.

I have a Winchester 1300 defender. I bought it about 4 months ago. It came with the folding stock and the original wood stock. The folder was installed. The first time I shot it I was turned off to the folding stock. too difficult to control and aim (contrary to some opinions you still have to aim a shotgun) and unfolded was not very stable. I have since placed the original back on the gun and that is the way it will stay.
I don't have a flashlight mounted on it yet but I think I have found a small rail that mounts to the mag tube and might get that soon. I would have to point out that one of the most valuable benifits of a flashlight on the gun is target identification. Making sure that the target is a threat and not a family member or another innocent person is very important.

bayo's are for looks. sure they hurt but i dont want anyone that close to me. across a 20ft room you need a trigger pull not a thrust. yes they are awsome looking. in trench warfare in the early 20th century they were real handy. maybe even in nam , but they are now a throwback of what once was. a really beutiful antique. you need a short lenght weapon system in a hd situation. my m4 is even a bit to long for my taste but the rapid fire dependability works largely in its favor. although my m4 is my favorite sg , in a pinch , my cut off mossy 500a is the best tool for the job. it is possibly the smoothest action wise i have ever seen. really smooth action. like butter. hopefully after a long breaking in period , this m4 will operate as smooth as my $375.00 mossy 500.i could work with my mossberg 500 in a pitch black room. no extras on it. just a cheap light mount with a $30.00 streamlite ,handheld scorpion attached. my wife can handle that gun flawlessly too.i tell her in a code red , if you have the time to grab the moss 500 ,instead of the barretta pistol , do it.love my mossy. i also have a 870 marine magnum nickel job. that rem870 is sticky and tight and no where near as smooth as the m500a. gotta say , i have'nt put this m4 down since i got it last week. its that nice. i put 50 rounds thru her at the range and it has the lightest recoil i ever felt. even with heavy slugs. amazing shotgun this m1014 is. anyone ever hear of buying one for $1300.00 ? thats what i got her for at the ft.myers fl. gun show last saturday. the show comes back in feb. and i'll try to score another one if i see one. the place had 1/2 million guns and i could only find 1 m4. i grabbed it and spent $13hundred...out the door...total that is. not many m4's out there with 2 stocks and a non limited magazine. holds 9 alltogether. sorry i am going on and on but i am high on this shotgun and now i'll shut up. i know , i know everyone out there is saying "its about time" LOVE MY M4. there is no better hd weapon out there.

| Tactical is a joke and a waste of money
This tactical stuff is the cash cow that sends silly modifications and replacement parts to the marketplace. Get a good gun for hunting and practice with it. You will never get off eight shots in a survival/defense scenario. A strange stock or other modification may make you lose the precious second or seconds you need.

| All you need
I've got a Benelli Nova tactical 12g with ghost ring sights. It's a 4+1 with black synthetic. I dont need a pistol grip or laser or anything crazy to kill somebody in my house. Extended magazine tubes and bayonets are pointless. If I can't kill whatever is in my house with 5, 3" slugs I figured I'm screwed anyways.... The MSRP on mine was 375 so its not a bad investment

Mossberg makes a reliable pump. I don't know about their autos but the pumps are nice guns. I have been thinking about getting a Mossberg slug gun before next deer season. We will see if that happens...

Your a little bit handy capped with the Mossberg I have pictured because of the 20''
barrel and the butt stock being long. It's normal length though.
My son that owns it is thinking about putting a youth size synthetic butt stock on it to shorten it some because with the recoil pad... if your not paying attention it will grab your shirt when you raise it...A.H

There's a guy in Canada that sells bayonet mounts for the 870 ($90) on e-bay. They look cool, almost bought one, but my 870 is getting kind of heavy as it is.

I'm not interested in a lot of "tactical" addons, but have been pondering whether to get "ghost ring" sights or the good old standard bead I'm used to. I know either will be fine in the primary defensive role in a house. I will be shooting the shorty a lot for fun, and just might take it on the skeet range or out in the field. (When I was a youngster I bagged lots of rabbits and quail with an 18" cylinder bore Remington Model 11 U.S. Army riot gun.) I'm not a big slug shooter, but know the "ghost ring" peep would be a big advantage with shooting those, and I might want to shoot some just for the heck of it. I'm just wondering (not having used them) if there's any downside to having the rifle sights mounted. Anybody done any wing shooting with rifle sights on a shotgun? Do they get in the way? (I'm inclined to think that a "ghost ring" probably wouldn't, but OTOH you'd be looking at a sight picture of the front blade through the peep, not the barrel with a bead on it that you're used to using for wing shooting.

I have a Police Remington 870 with an 18" bbl and a 6 shot tube. I also have a Norinco 1897 Trench Gun and 2 Ithica Mod 37 DSPS parkerized 9 shot Military/Riot guns. There is a Benelli M1 Military shotgun in the safe also. There are many good shotguns available out there. The Mossberg 590 is also an excellent choice. I have #6 birdshot as the first round followed by #4 buck with the last 2 rounds being slugs. Less lethal to most lethal. I'm looking for the lil sling type things that fit on the forend to slide your hand into when pumping the action. I saw some years ago but can't find any now.
