My neighbor is a Russian Jew, he won the lottery to come here. Nicolas and I have spent many evenings sitting on my front porch drinking Budweiser beer and many on his drinking Vodka (Note: NEVER try to match a Russian drink for drink of vodka, you will lose.) He has a lovely family a daughter of 9 and another 3. Him and his wife both have accents but the kids have none. When there are English speaking people around Nicolas makes the whole family speak English, he told me he thinks it is rude to not do so. Nicolas moved in about four years ago and just this last may I got the whole story of how he came to America. I came home and nicolas was on the porch so I went next door, and Nicolas was having an drink after he poured me one he asked “Do you love this country?” naturally I said “yes” he then said “This is the greatest country in the world, I am an American and my kids are Americans, I love this country”. He finally told me how and why he came to America:
I knew Nicolas was a Russian trained psychologist, and that his father was a famous Russian psychologist. He often help out the local Moscow police, and he was used to having the police arrive in the middle of the night to get him to go help talk to some drunk whom was threatening to kill himself or his family. So when the there was a knock on his door and threw the peep hole his wife saw a Moscow cop she let him in, four armed men entered the apartment with rifles and took them captive. The men then trashed his apartment and hauled out anything of value to a truck down stairs. What they left, they broke, Nicolas naturally was concerned for his family so when the men wanted to know where his money was he told them, hoping if they guys got what the wanted they would leave, and spare their lives. In the end before they left, all four men raped his wife in front of him, he helpless to do anything for her. Six months later his wife won the lottery and they came to California with $70.00 in his pocket. He stayed with some friend of some friends whom had come here earlier and the next day he had a job cleaning offices at night. He now owns his own business and proudly tells everyone that he has never been on the dole. He has a nice house that he has earned himself.
The biggest problem with the lottery is that it was by chance that Nicolas got to come here, Him and his family are a great contribution to our country, and these are the types of people that I want to immigrate into our country.

Wow! I hope the patriot acts never lead to a situation like that! Those folks are soooo lucky,it sounds almost like a miracle! :nod:

Tell your friend Nicholas "Welcome to America" for us. He is most certainly welcome and I wish more of his kind could make it over here without any problems.

What happened to him and his family is terrible and God willing will never happen here.

He can have that vodka though. That stuff gives me the 2nd worse hangover I have ever had. Only thing worse was Victorias Bitter (VB) down in Sydney - good gooly my breath the next day could have knocked a buzzard off of a 2 week old kill.
