Well actually it was a guided tour through a Crystal Cave in Kutztown, PA, but I like the word splunking so I wanted to use it. Besides, they did turn the lights off at one point. The cave was beautiful, and the tour guide, good looking. Afterwards, I headed over to the Kutztown Fair. You guys would love it. They had an oldfashioned gun smith there. They had glassblowing, farm animals, and all the Pennylvania Deutch food to clog your arteries that you would want. Overall, it was a good day.

Cool! Caves are cool. There was one I went through in Tucson, can't remember the name. Mabe Snakebite can help us out.

You betcha I can! Been in all of them. Probably Colossal Cave but there are a few lesser known ones. Peppersauce Canyon has one that I got lost in once and had to yell for help. Its a cave where a lot of people go to party and no fancy stalagmites or anything but there is an underground river for those brave enough to go in that far. The absolute neatest cave ever is Karchner Caverns near Benson. That place has to be seen to be believed. Rock formations inside are mind boggling...very humbling when you go see what nature can do. |

 SRX...Caves are very interesting and make us realize how insignificant our short lifespans are here on earth. Those caverns have been forming for who knows how long underneath us. Missouri, too, has a large number of caves, including a huge number of commercial caves. In fact, here in K.C. one cave opens to the side of a hill and has 25-30 miles of roads within, and is occupied by numerous industries. One unique leasee is the U.S. Postal Service which houses new stamps there because of the constant temperature and low humidity. Each winter, a 5K charity run occurs there which draws several thousand runners. All of this occuring inside regardless of how much snow is outside or the temperature above ground. Also, one of these commerecial caves is located directly under Worlds of Fun Amusement Theme Park. In addition, in the Ozarks Mountain area of southcentral Missouri, numerous caves have been discovered and explored. One, Marvel Cave, is owned and operated by women. The entrance is within the Silver Dollar Amusement Park and tourists ride trams throughout most of the tour. I've personally been through Marvel Cave, Bridal Cave, and a few more that I've forgotten their names. Here's a link listing many of Missouri's caves. My kids love going on cave tours, we have several here in No. Ca. But they hate it when they turn out they lights all of the cave tours do that here. I have to keep an eye on my son or he tries to go off on his own exploring. http://www.boydencavern.com/ |

Down here in Florida, we have the Marianna Caverns in Marianna, Fla. Yep, they do the light trick too. I guess they like to make the touristas squirm . . . One passage is at about a 60 degree angle - you walk thru leaning over! This is a limestone cave system, with really earie calcite formations. When I toured it, we were in a major drought - the lower levels were drier than normal. That tour guide (a young lady) was cute too!

SRX, you know I was born and raised in NE Pennsylvania and never did get to those caves. In fact, I look back now, and realize all of the things that were so close by that I never took in. Sad. We visited my (now retired) cousin when he and his wife were at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and while there we visited a huge cave in the area of south Kentucky. It was amazing. The name escapes me now so, Papa...help me out....what's the name of the cave?
