Paid Cash for a Craftsman in April 20 hp 6 speed and does it cut in 5th gear -- I am going to have to install a roll bar soon if I keep taking corners at high speed. I went in on the weekend they were doing an additional 10% off if you used a sears card -- so I had them open the account charge the machine then I immediately turned around and paid off the account and closed it. ended up getting out the door for $890 on a $1200 machine.

I'm working on my Craftsman 42" Lawn Tractor today. Bought it new in 1992 and haven't had to do more than change oil, filter, clean breather, battery, air up tires and sharpen blades. Not bad for a 12 yr old machine.

I finally decided to change the main drive belt ($19) and the serpentine belt ($23) and pay myself instead of the shop which wanted $50/hour. Got the deck off this morning in about an hour, and now I'm starting to install the new belts. Should have the complete job done in about one more hour of work. I figure the shop would have charged me at least two hours of labor, maybe three...and charged additional for those belts. Guess I like saving money by doing most things myself. Then I can buy a few :cheer: to celebrate getting the job done right.

My stepfather had a deere and the Kohler engine went bad just out of warranty -- most sears mowers run B&S engines that will run forever. - My last mower was a 35 year old Homelite 22" deck with a 7 horse Briggs what a runner -- I gave it to the ex when I bought the 42" decked unit.

Talking

...hey...that's John Deer's line..."nothing runs like a Deere." At least Craftsman walks the talk. :right:

Thumbs up

My Craftsman came with a Kohler...as I recall it has either a 12 or 14 hp engine. I prefer Kohler's pressure oil lubricating system over the splash system of B.&S.

Sears walks the talk. Awhile ago i bought a paint gun and compressor and a small part was missing. They gave me another compleat unit at no charge. And told me to keep the first unit.

My craftsman has a briggs and straton in it. 42" deck, not a bad piece of equipment. I've got 4.5 acres to mow and this beast has been a good workhorse.

I use to run a John Deere riding mower and I was always going as fast as possible.
I was in top gear going around a sharp right hand corner when the left front wheel hit a berm. It tore off the steering linkage and I ended up busting through a small picket fence. The boss was not amused with that one.
