I just bought my first M1 Carbine. It Says E.F.M. Under the sight and 979 under that. My question is What Does E.F.M. stand for and is 979 the serial # Thanks for your time!!!
DANA, CAN YOU GIVE ME A GENERAL WORTH OF A WWII M1 CARBINE? GUY CLOSE TO ME HAS ONE FOR SALE OR TRADE...HE SAYS IT IS: USGI. Quality Hardware mfg. with a Rockola barrel (correct as the QHC guns used Rockola barrels)

shot my EFM carbine at 25 yds. shot very well except after 150 rds the rear sight moved out to the right. also shot some french ammo, It sucked!!! 16 out of 100 rds failed to fire. No problem at all with Lake city ammo!!!
FRENCH AMMO! HO Boy have you got trouble! Get to work scrubbing out the carbine! You shot some corrosive ammo there! The reason you had so many misfires is that French ammo is shorter than USGI ammo. The french do not allow their citizens to own firearms in standard military calibers. You better not shoot that garbage anymore. You will need to take down the gas system too to get that cleaned out. Use an ammonia base window cleaner. and scrub, scrub, scrub!

I used a parts cleaner (varsol) to clean my carbine. It worked O.K.! Took a lot of scrubbing!!!!! What brand of ammo should I try? I have used Lake city and it shot fine but it wasnt cheap! (at least not nearly as cheap as that french junk)
Stick to US commercial ammo. Any kind will do. None of it is corrosive. Be careful though. There is some LC72 ammo out there that is actually Chinese! And it is corrosive too. Even the old USGI surplus would be ok. No US makers ever produced corrosive ammo for the carbine, not even during WWII.

The (hardware) is called the Recoil Plate. And as that along with the screw are what hold the receiver assemble into the stock. And that is important. But if the Choate stock is like a M-1A1 para carbine you might not need it. But if its the matching manufacurer as the receiver I'd hang on to it.
