Yup, a lot is the southwest is in the same boat. What do you suggest? In The third world state of Florida, the govenor wants to give them driver's licenses and let them roam freely. I swear, it's true!

Hello. While I don't "know" them and never attended one of their shows, ZZ Top used to play in Denton all the time years ago. Seen 'em loading up their stuff more than once and stopped my patrol unit to visit a minute. Seemed like nice enough guys and they were sober when I saw them. I was sort of suprised. I don't remember if it was a sheriff or Texas Ranger, but there was reportedly a really bad outlaw wanted and he was holed up either at home or at his mother's. A Ranger (?) convinced the wife (or mother) to send him out and he could be arrested w/o incident. The guy was supposed to be willing to shoot at the drop of a hat. The bad guy came out. The Ranger/Sheriff? shot him on the spot. Supposedly the law enforcement officer was asked about this and replied that "You don't take chances with some folks. He was dangerous." Best.

Interesting story Stephen. I haven't heard it, but somethings don't shock me. Especially if it was back in the 60's or 70's. There seemed to have been a lawless time for LE in TX. I hear stories from old salts who talk about beating people over the head with their slap jacks and stuff. Officers in TX seem to have had little accountability for their actions during that time.

I can atest to some of the lawlessness in Houston during the seventies. But with the bad there was always the good and have been treated both ways by Houston cops. Brown went a long way in cleaning up that the department. It's come a long way. And the old salt stories? When I had my business in Houston I had a customer that was a retired Ranger and the stories he told were worthy of a book. After being disabled on the job he was in the business of selling costumes and shoes to strippers in the Houston area. And of course those were a whole nother book of stories. He became a Ranger out of art school because of all of the art that was being smuggled up through Mexico, that was before drugs were popular. Times change I guess.
