A Metro police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg and a suspect is in critical condition after an early morning shootout in an east Nashville neighborhood, authorities said.
The 3:30 a.m. shooting happened after police chased the suspect to an alley between North Sixth and North Seventh streets.
An officer saw the suspect's car and saw that it bore a license plate from a pickup truck. The suspect drove off, eventually crashed, and fired a semi-automatic weapon at pursuing officers as he ran away, police said.
The suspect has not been identified, Metro police said.
An unidentified 33-year-old female passenger in the suspect's car was not harmed, police said.
Police say the shooting by the three officers, Cole Womack, Peter Lynch and Sungjun Park, was in self-defense. The officers are on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, police said.
Lynch is recovering at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The suspect was shot in the head, right leg and right foot and is also at Vanderbilt.
