Teen Badly Burned in Fire Stunt

(Greenwood) -- A teenager is in a drug-induced coma. Thomas Jefferson, 15, is clinging to life on a ventilator following a harrowing ordeal.

Authorities say it happened in front of a home in the 4300 block of Mahogany Drive in Greenwood on July 5th.

"[A friend] goes and gets the gasoline, the victim takes his shirt off, he pours the gasoline on the shirt, the victim puts his shirt back on and his other friend lights him on fire,” explained Eric Brown, White River Township Fire Marshal

Authorities say that happened after Jefferson and two friends ran out of fireworks and decided to try to light each other's clothes on fire. Jefferson was engulfed in flames from his head to his waist.

"I would never have imagined something like this to happen. I mean things go on in different neighborhoods, but not that. They're old enough to know better,” said neighbor Michelle Cordray.

Added fellow neighbor Scott Moore "At 10:30 they were throwing firecrackers at each other beside my house and I told them they need to get home and then ten minutes later I see an ambulance show up.”

In short, authorities call it a stunt gone terribly wrong -- a horrible lesson about the dangers of fire.

"It was a weapon. It may not have been intentional, but it doesn't make it right. It still occurred,” said brown.

Brown says that the other teens -- Austin Hart and Tyler Lockwood -- face charges of felony arson, aggravated assault and criminal wrecklessness. They have a preliminary hearing the second week in august in Johnson County.

Meantime, Jefferson, who was severely burned, is expected to remain in a drug-induced coma for the next couple of weeks in riley hospital.

They need to prosecute the kid who didn't get burned with Attemped Murder and the other needs to be held for a 72 hour psych eval. I am thinking both should seek pyschiatric help in a mental institution for a minimum of 5 years.

This level of un-intelligance is probably more prevelent than we think. How incredibly stupid can someone be. All three should go to jail for being completely flipp'n stupid.

well even if they dont do time its just a matter of time till they off theirself. i imagine as smart as they are,next 4th of july one of them will come up with the idea to stick a fire cracker up their butt! sheesh

We are dealing with kids that Do not believe they can be hurt.
they have never seen injury or death
everyone who they have seen that died was on Tv and they where back next week on a different show.
kinda like the MTV show Jackass
those guys do the stupidest things but its ok because they are on TV..............
I was channel flipping and happend to land on that show
they had a guy with a baby carrier he is on a busy street he gets in his car leaving the baby carrier on the roof and drives slowly away
they film the reactions of passers by and how they try to stop the guy to save the child (which is a doll)
the real and true distress that the people on the street go through trying to help.............
thats mean
they did the same thing with a guy on a bicycle with a baby seat in the back.
the guy rides up and crashes the bike and quickly rides off freaking out everyone that sees it.
they do the dumbest things on that show
Kids watch it and try it themselves.
there is the skate board dude that is mean to his parents.
and does all sorts of stupid stunts ON TV
showing other kids how.

there are quite an awful lot of people who do drugs everyday..according to the DEA and any other governmental agency you may want to consult..very few do anything near this stupid..btw according to Department of Justice statistics 100 million Americans have used illicit and or illegal drugs at some point in their lives..I'm not condoning it..I'm merely pointing out facts.. :jaw: stupid is stupid..whether they were stoned or not :insane:
